Early Imperial Roman 2 auxiliary infantry AHPC post

Here we have a unit of auxiliary infantry from Newline,  like my previous post they came from an I'll considered bid on Ebay, coupled with a desire to get a bargain! I largely avoid Ebay now but with my need to mobilise a Roman army these lead reservists have been called up.
I didn't think I'd had them that long but I now realise I've moved house twice since I got them plus my daughter was in primary school and I am now taking her to look at universities as she is doing her A levels,so I think they qualify for this location!

Newline  figures seem a little simple and plain in their unpainted state but I think come up quite nicely with the application of paint, certainly enough detail and frankly not too much!
They was something of a throwback to the past as these chaps were bought primed in white and I've had to adapt,  I know with contrast paints white primer is making a comeback but it's still a little weird to me!
Plain shields on these, maybe the next unit will get a bit of decoration.
Next up some more dark age types.
All the best
Iain

  1. Great work on the Roman's Iain, know what you mean about white primer, just doesn't give the same results as black. Sometimes Ebay is worth it like on this occasion

    1. Thanks Dave! Just different I guess because I'm not used to it, I try and avoid Ebay because there's always something I'd buy!

  2. I like these, they do seem a lot less fussy than my own Imperial Roman Auxilia (from Foundry). I hope that yours see a lot more action than mine ever did (I've never used mine) and as for primer, like yourself I've been through the whole gamut of colours, none of which seem to improve my painting.

    Stay safe and stay home

    1. Thanks Joe! Maybe I'd got into a rut with black primer?

  3. Excellent painting as usual Iain.

I was thinking I didn’t have anything that had been in the lead pile that long but I then remembered that Heroics and Ros pack of Pathans that I bought at least 4 (FOUR) house moves ago - before my eldest was born and he’s 22! 😞

  4. Nice work! Newline figures have a distinctive, somewhat rounded sculpting style. Figures have a definite charm and I like them.

  7. Nice unit Iain, I had to smile when you realised that you had moved house twice and your daughter had grown up since getting these figures. Nice to get them from long term storage to table.

  8. Nicely done Iain. I opened some of my paint reserves a couple of weeks ago and was mildly annoyed that some of pots appeared to have perished, until I looked back at the date on the order which was eleven years ago. It's truly amazing how quickly time passes on some of these projects.

  17. Great looking Ancients, Iain. I've bought quite a few things off of ebay. When they allowed WA State to add their sales tax last year (2019), I stayed off for a while, but started up again - although I will always have to factor in our 9+ percent tax.

  18. Very nicely done "Classic" Roman infantry Iain - these figure look very crisp, a true example of the principle "less is more"
