We had a go at a historical game from Peters scenario book, Graz is in modern day Croatia and we adapted it to what we had, I think in retrospect we made the Austrians too good but I had lots of Austrian line regiments wheras they were meant to be substandard, the scenario calls for the French to take the bridge, but even with twelve infantry battalions arriving it was all a bit congested on a 6 x 4 table and we probably didn't have enough time, still we both enjoyed it and it was great getting the figures on the table for a first game of 2026! I didn't have enough Hungarians, so the Reuss unit got press ganged in, probably not for the last time!
We also seem to be getting a better hang of Valour and Fortitude, which is great!
All the bestIain

Great to see you're figures in action Iain and they do look rather cool:)! How often we do get into a game, to suddenly realise we've gone a bit OTT on the number of units? So easily done;). But you had fun which at the end of the day is waht a hobby should be about!
ReplyDeleteEspecially when we hadnt had a game in ages? Pile the units on! But as you said we had fun and it looked grand!

Painting more Hungarians up next! Fine looking game with lots of densely-packed Napoleonics.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan, three more Hungarian units, primed and somewhere in the painting queue, oh I see them, next to the three Wesphalian units!

That looks a nice game Iain and a good opportunity to get a game going. The photo’s instantly remind me of those pics in Charles Grant’s Napoleonic Wargaming - a book that was influential to this wargamer in the early 70’s - nice!
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see you sticking with Valour & Fortitude, do you plan on using them with the new army lists for your pike & Shot games.
Thanks Norm and yes I thought they reminded me of an old school game, which I figured was a good thing! Really enjoying Valour and Fortitude, I hadnt seen the new army lists, I was planning on adapting warlord pike and shot with valour and fortitude order and other bits?

I think Jervis ultimately wants to explore just how wide these rules can actually go. He seems to think everything up to WW1, so me may have more to come.
DeleteGrew looking game Iain!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike!

The wargaming paradox, "too many units and not enough units at the same time." 😂
ReplyDeleteGreat looking game Iain.
Thanks Ben, oh and chuck in not enough time!

ReplyDeleteThanks very much Dave!

ReplyDeleteThanks Michal!

It all looks great Iain. We have often made the mistake of putting on too many units which limits maneuverability, making the initial deployment the main factor.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence, yes it looked great and was great fun, all that really matters!

Great to see your lovely Nappies out on the tabletop, better start painting more Hungarians!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray, there are three units in the painting queue, already primed!

ReplyDeleteThanks very much Suber, very kind of you!

Lovely looking battle Iain and V&F now our go to rules requiring very little tweaking. Certainly and ambitious size battle for 6x4 ! Not a lot of space for the cavalry I guess ?
ReplyDeleteYes its a great rule set for us! Not so much ambitious as daft!

I don't have the scenario with me (in Puerto Rico, missing the blizzard at home), but units in FoB in line have a frontage of 6 to 8 units. If yours are substantially larger, adjust the table size accordingly. Superior French leadership and army morale were the key things in this battle.
ReplyDeleteI think we were just over exited to get a Napoleonic game in for the first time in months and overloaded the table and possibly improved the Austrian quality and morale too much, as the French were mostly similar to the Austrians!

Smashing display of firepower there mate.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Mark , Im expecting similar AWI games on your table soon!

That looks a terrific game Iain! Lots of great looking troops and a hard battle - what's not to like! I frequently add so many troops on the table that there is no manoeuvre room on the flanks! :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks Jadon, its easily done isnt it!
