Terrain 15 burnt out barn

This is a balsa wood barn I made for a job, when I was a model maker, almost 20 years ago that was going to be chucked so I said I'll have it and it's been knocking around, a bit broken in a box until I eventually thought I'd just better get it done. As it's all balsa it's a  bit delicate  I gave it a coat of dilute pva to strengthen it up a bit, it also had a bit of emulsion in it to give it a bit of colour,  a dirty wash, then a black wash and another dirty wash. It's really northern European 19th century but I will happily use it in 1809 on the danube,in the 17th century ( or even earlier!) in Britain and it can get overrun by my Soviets too!

We also set up for a big pike and shot game  including the recently rebased figures,AAR to follow at some point!
Next up? Probably something Napoleonic as I  clear the decks for the Analogue Hobbies painting challenge starting on the 20th of December.

All the best Iain

  1. Excellent ramshackle building and very ‘multi-period’. That looks an interesting action with a cavalry wing Vs infantry / hedges.

  2. Terrific work Iain. I wouldn't have the patience to do something as intricate as that, even with a significant intervening period between starting and completion. Very nice indeed.

    1. Thanks Lawrence, it took a while but, clearly I enjoy that type of thing! Not sure you wouldn't have the patience coming from a man who is into double digits for 28mm Napoleonic cavalry units!

  3. Great looking dilapidated building but, oh, your battle dispositions are inviting. How large is your table?

  4. Great looking ruined barn Iain. I’ll second Jonathan’s comments on the table. If the hedges were ramparts it would look like Ravenna

  7. Excellent looking barn Iain, great construction, and love the damaged look.

  8. Love it. Big enough for a unit, but lots of nooks and crannies if you used it in a skirmish game. Would something like modpodge give it a little durability? The Youtube terrain guys all seem to swear by it.

  9. The barn looks great Iain…
I suspect that it would work well in a North American setting as well as Gothic Horror and the like.

    All the best. Aly

  10. Great building and as you say very useful across many eras.
The fact that is an old build , that's beenrefurbishedf makes it so more more from my perspective.

    1. Thanks Joe,I like it's multiple periods, places, it's nice to have specific pieces that can be backed up with generic and good to get something patched up and called finished!

  12. As it's true scale it's begging for Three Musketeers skirmish or similar.

    1. Yes it will work well for a bit of skirmish, especially with the steps and platform!

  13. That looks really convincing, excellent job. The colours of the old weathered and burnt wood look spot on, something I always struggle with.

  14. Lots of goodness on display: impressive effects on the ruined barn; any figs posed with it are fine (although my preference is for the 17th Cent). The game layout is enticing: looking forward to a report--if you don't get too wrapped up in playing to remember to record it :)

    1. Thanks Ed, I'm sure you're not the only one who prefers the 17th century in this context, trying to find time to write up the AAR before I forget it, how prescient of you!
