Last Late Roman shieldwall unit, like the other units second hand black tree design figures, nice to paint, although being second hand I now realise upon painting them that there are a couple of later dark age types with longer hair, no belt and a slightly different dress, but with the same shield, spangleheim helmet, mail and spear I think theyll do! Speaking of the hand painted shield, I only realised it was a cavalry design after Id painted it,whoops!
Like the other infantry units, all individualy mounted on 1p pieces and sabot based in a warbases 120mm mdf base, still got to finish an archer unit then this little army is complete.
Next up, Great Italian Wars cavalry or Napoleonics I think?
All the best
Iain

ReplyDeleteThank you Michal!

They look great Iain, and an army nearly finished is a good result too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, its only a small army but should be able to get a game in soon with them?

Nicely done there Iain and I doubt any of us would have spotted the different helms and lack of waist belt!
ReplyDeleteWell I cleaned them up , stuck the shields on and primed them and didnt notice!

Ian, such good looking troops! Late Romans are a good choice with all the opportunity for some interesting games.
ReplyDeleteI guess with the collapse of the western empire, there is a lot of gaming opportunity, plus theres always the eastern empire too!

They look excellent Iain, shame on the shield design, but I wouldn't have known if you hadn't said ! LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave, it was based on a nice illustration of an armoured chap with spear and shield, it was only later that I read he was a dismounted cavalryman!

Nicely done, Iain.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Richard, Italian wars next, honest!

Incorrect period or not, the figs look great Iain and I had no idea about the shields and am sure few others would either!
ReplyDeleteI think its fine in this period really, just a bit funny finding some huscarls in a late Roman unit!

These look like great additions Iain. Very nicely done.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence, Im pretty happy with them!

Nice work!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I wouldn't know about the details. Maybe those wouldn't be too out of place even historically on the fringes of the Empire as things were falling apart?
Thanks Fitz, there is always the Ridley Scott defence of you werent there, but I prefer your version with limited resources in a deteriorating situation!

Well, they have most definitely taken those shields from some loser horse-friends. A typical prank between warriors. Now the cavalry blokes are all over like crazy "man, where did *you* put our shields?"
ReplyDeleteLove your theory Suber, I hadnt thought of that but its entirely possible!

Nice work black tree not my favorite figs although I have plenty of their Arabs but they do fine when massed in ranks together. 👍
ReplyDeleteIts funny isnt it, Ive got Foundry and Black Tree in this force, Foundry are one of my all time favourites but I prefer the chunkier Black Tree design figures, I find them easier to paint?

They look great Iain.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about the shields or gear, obviously there were some supply shortages in the Late Roman period that led to some un-orthodox kit 😂
Thanks Ben, behind the penguin general there is somebody very sensible!😂

Nice work, Iain! I like BTD figures although I have not seen any of their Romans.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan, yes I like them and most of my dark age types are Black Tree!

Another great addition to your Late Romans.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Dean!

They just happened to all find these shields lying around next to some unguarded horses! They look great!
ReplyDeleteYou know what, thats exactly what a bunch of squaddies would probably do I think!
