Last shielwall unit Late Roman 5

Last Late Roman shieldwall unit, like the other units second hand black tree design figures, nice to paint, although being second hand I now realise upon painting them that there are a couple of later dark age types with longer hair, no belt and a slightly different dress, but with the same shield, spangleheim helmet, mail and spear I think theyll do! Speaking of the hand painted shield, I only realised it was a cavalry design after Id painted it,whoops!

Like the other infantry units, all individualy mounted on 1p pieces and sabot based in a warbases 120mm mdf base, still got to finish an archer unit then this little army is complete.

Next up, Great Italian Wars cavalry or Napoleonics I think?

All the best

Iain

    1. I guess with the collapse of the western empire, there is a lot of gaming opportunity, plus theres always the eastern empire too!

    1. Thanks Dave, it was based on a nice illustration of an armoured chap with spear and shield, it was only later that I read he was a dismounted cavalryman!

  10. Nice work!
Yeah, I wouldn't know about the details. Maybe those wouldn't be too out of place even historically on the fringes of the Empire as things were falling apart?

    1. Thanks Fitz, there is always the Ridley Scott defence of you werent there, but I prefer your version with limited resources in a deteriorating situation!

  11. Well, they have most definitely taken those shields from some loser horse-friends. A typical prank between warriors. Now the cavalry blokes are all over like crazy "man, where did *you* put our shields?"

    1. Its funny isnt it, Ive got Foundry and Black Tree in this force, Foundry are one of my all time favourites but I prefer the chunkier Black Tree design figures, I find them easier to paint?

  13. They look great Iain.
Don't worry about the shields or gear, obviously there were some supply shortages in the Late Roman period that led to some un-orthodox kit 😂
