Austrian hussar regiment Hessen Homberg Napoleonic 75

  •  Perry plastic Austrian hussars, lovely figures and of course it's mandatory to do the Hessen Homberg regiment for your first unit! I know boring, but what can you do? This will be my only proper Austrian hussars, the other three units are two units of  left over early British light dragoons press ganged into the Austrian army, (their horses going to the Austrian dragoons, their later comrades becoming Austrian Uhlans)and one made up of a couple of spare Austrians, some French hussars and some more of the lost early British light dragoons all mixed together on either Prince August home cast horses with Perry plastic heads, (the frankenstein hussars, ) or Warlord ECW plastic horses. But that's in the future, here's the real deal, well as real as I  get! I found some geriatric GW elemental green that still seemed to work, contributing to a lovely light operatic costume , sorry  uniform.

 They're a bit messy, but I think they'll do!

The future holds more Austrian cavalry     (as I  might have just suggested!) fighting it out with terrain it seems at the moment  , I've worked out I've still got a years worth of Austrians to paint at my current level plus a years worth of Spanish, another one of Prussian and one more of Bavarian /Polish plus six months of French , solid painting without doing anything else ( all Napoleonic) ,so add another year for Early Imperial Romans  and Celts and say one each for remaining Great Italian Wars and one for Hundred years war, even without dark ages and terrain or bolt action it would mean I'd have to live four years longer than either of my brothers , morbid miniatures, memento mori or just being realistic? Better get my finger out ! Anyway more varied Austrians and terrain coming up at some point, oh and current Napoleonic figures total for the year is 385, one more unit and an individual should get me over the line, I'll see what I can do!

All the best

 Iain

  1. A crackin looking bit of brushwork Iain. It's a very distinctive looking unit, and its a must for any gamer.

  3. Napoleonic period continues to baffle and confuse me - but congrats, at least your horses have riders…lol.

    1. Thanks Mark,it's at least a colourful period, I'd have thought you'd get into it a bit because of where you are, going native as it were!

  4. Rather like Mark above, I find the Nappies period all too varied and confusing. However, your unit does look good and one has to admire the sheer variety and elegance of the uniforms, especially of the Hussars:). As for time taken to clear the lead pile, best not to think about it in too much detail, but I know I need to rationalise it down to a much more manageable size...

  6. Fine looking hussars Iain.
We're all fighting time. The bigger question is whether whittling the lead pile and playing with the toys brings joy in the meantime.

    1. Thanks Richard, a finite amount of time but I'm certainly enjoying chipping off the lead mountain!

  7. Hussars always look joyous in their splendour. With your ‘realistic’ look at the painting queue, your fast paint approach is exactly what the Napoleonics need ….. well that’s what your Romans, Celts, Italian Wars and Bolt Action think anyway :-).

  8. They look splendid: a fine choice to represent the Kaiserlicks. I don't have the courage to count up the ratio of figures to lifespan ratio: fortunately, that Mount Everest of painting challenges, Napoleonics, is already behind me.

    1. Thanks very much Stew, I know they're not ant eaters but there was almost a unit of hussars in the AWI, until the rebels started getting bills for clothing!

  12. It is probably best not to calculate how long one needs to live to complete the lead pile. I'm just hoping that retirement allows an increase in output, but I'm also concerned that it will be a bit like being given the keys to the sweet shop and being told you can go in whenever you like. Great work on the Austrians Iain. For a minute there I though Geriatric Green was the result of another of those constant GW name-changes.

    1. Thanks Lawrence, you are of course right best not to dwell, I suppose after my last big Perry purchases of most of about four Napoleonic armies, I wondered how long they would take to do and how long I would need, my brothers lasted to 63 and 64 but my dad was still working at 89, if I take after my dad I've got loads of time! I can imagine GW doing Geriatric Green, perhaps for dwarves?

  13. Iain, wonderful huzzars, just worth the wait. I see your smile in the projection of how long to finish painting. Go for it! It looks as if your tempo and supply are similar to mine. Thing is, I have several younger brothers that I expect to outlive. I just won't tell them who they are. Keeps us all on our toes. It is good to know your limitations but I would bet you have a lot of good games to.play with those hussars.

  14. I reckon if you are going to paint an Austrian hussar unit it really has to be these…
    So very colourful…
As to painting mountains and timescales… I’ve stopped worrying/thinking about such things… As long as I have something there to paint I’m happy 😁

    All the best. Aly

  15. A fine unit of Austrian Hussaren, Iain. While we get no guarantees, if your present health is good, odds are you'll live into your 80's at least!
And since you will have do at least one more Austrian Hussar unit (I have 6 myself!), it will be necessary for you to do so! :-)

  16. Thanks Peter, I guess on both counts! I've got three more Austrian hussar units coming down the line!

  17. Great stuff Iain - I can't say for certain but these look like one of the two Austrian Hussar regiments I painted a decade or more ago - to be honest, they have a lot of very bright, multi coloured uniforms in their hussar regiments!
I am now two years older than either of my parents lived to be, so I can see where you are coming from - but I don't dwell on it either - not much I can do except make sure I have the scheduled maintenance and service inspections!

  18. They look truly impressive. The composition and the vibrant palette makes them look dynamic, aggressive, ready for battle. Great work!
