Two six pounders for the Austrians, Perry metal once more, nice but two of the figures were missing their noses!
Easier as there is less white! I rather like their business like uniforms and old school bicornes!
This bit's for Keith,we popped up to Coventry for the weekend and rather than stay in a hotel we stayed in a rather nicely refurbished 15th century tower from the old city walls, I thought it might be of interest to some?
Next up? More Napoleonics, France has to get even!

The tower does look spiffy, though I have to ask - if an Austrian gunner has no nose, how does he smell?

Excellent! I am particularly fond of Austrian artillery uniforms. Staying in a tower overnight must have been fun. Great photos and thanks for sharing your recent outing.

Lovely work Iain, and the ochre colour you have used looks spot on. I love the accommodation in Coventry. I remember booking a couple of nights in a 16th century inn in Beaconsfield complete with four-poster bed, but didn't have a great sleep. Everything seemed to creak, I'm fairly sure the bed linen was original and the floor was like trying to navigate across rocks at a beach. The fact I remember it so well fifteen years later rather than the many anodyne hotel rooms I have stayed in must count for something though.

I'm a fan of the Austrian Artillery as well - the combination of the very practical brown coats with the somewhat outrageous yellow ochre carriages is special!

ReplyDeleteThe tower reminds me very much of our own city wall towers that still exist and at lest two are still in use. The doorway shows some great achitectural features.

Great looking Austrian gun crews Iain....I wonder what heinous crime the nose less gunners had committed before they were recruited from thr gaols of Wien?! The tower looks like a great place to stay...much better than the local Ibis! When I met my wife in the UK, we were both working at Yo Olde Bell hotel in Hurley, near Maidenhead (google it, it's quite famous and has been in a few films) Reputed to be the oldest inn in England (yes, I know...!) parts dated from 1185 and much of the main building was Jacobean. It was obviously genuine, narrow, creaking stair ways, cramped passages and the ceilings in many rooms were very low...I am 5'8" or 172cm and I could stretch my arm up and touch the ceiling in the main dining room! We also had a restored tithe barn as a conference/event facility...mostly weddings. A highlight was when we had the US Olympic basket ball team stay...not because I have any interest in basket ball, but it was amusing to see all the players having to stoop permanently as they moved around the place😜 I think it also had some WWII role...perhaps Eisenhowers HQ when he first arrived in the UK.
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, I remember staying in a hotel in Poole I think where the Italian yachting team were based for the Olympics, they all looked like Adonis,whereas the British staff all looked like they'd been marrying their cousins for the last century ,bit of a contrast!

I'm very impressed with your rapidly growing Austrian army. Interesting too that the old Coventry gate houses have been refurbished as accommodation though I'm not sure I'd fancy wandering around the Swanswell after dark!

Nice artillery! I like a good 6-pounder. Not too heavy so as to be hard to manuever in battleground mud, but large enough bangs to seriously do damage to one's targets.

My experiences with Coventry were rather different. I found it to be rough and industrial personally. Shame, cos that place looks darling.
