Great Italian wars 38 final hinchcliffe mounted crossbow men unit

Finally finished the last unit I've got made up of mounted crossbow men. Mostly hinchcliffe with Perry plastic heads added, a one piece hinchcliffe Henry VIII (as the proprietor) a spare old glory jinette and a foundry hundred years war mounted longbow man( now with added crossbow!)










Lousy photos I'm afraid but it was too wet and there wasn't time to take them to the shed to take better photos, the papal flag is a free download from the web, to add to my others from Pete's flags.
 I'm putting together a Papal army to fight my Venetian troops with To the strongest! I think I might almost be there with this unit.
Next up maybe some shot/ crossbow men, terrain? Something soon anyway.

    Lovely, the head swaps have worked perfectly. The 'Papal Flag', is this something that has been a constant down the ages or are there several Papal Flag designs? I ask, because of trying to identify the Papal Flag that was carried at Hastings in 1066.

      Thanks Norm, it's actually a medieval,13/14th century I think, so slightly anachronistic but I'm pretty sure that the crossed key's are emblems of Saint Peter and red and orange as well as white were papal colours from the eighth century on I hope that's some help but I'm not sure it is!

    Nicely looking crossbowmen, Iain. A witty solution with an archer. It's good to see nonstandard things. It will definitely diversify the collection.

    Good work, Iain! This unit is a real mish-mash of different manufacturers plus your own conversions. Neat!

    You have two TtS! armies ready to take to the field? I look forward to seeing them both in all of their glory.

      I know, it's a little insane isn't it? It's on the light cavalry sprue I think, possibly compensating?!

      Thanks Ronin! The base for skirmishing light cavalry is 45mm wide and 90mm deep, I just liked the look when I saw it on James Roach's Olicanaland blog and pinched it!

    Fine unit once again Iain. I admire the way you mix different ranges together to produce variation it really works. Like the head swaps but my favourite has to be the Henry VIII figure.

      Thanks Lee! I'm happy with the mix! Henry and his brother (I guess that makes him Arthur?) were free additional figures I got with some wagons from hinchcliffe, nice one piece figures!

    Great unit, but I'm a sucker for anything Hinchliffe - HVIII doesn't seem to be listed by Hinds Figures so I will have to scour eBay for one of those!

      Thanks Oli! Yes you seem to need lots of mounted crossbow men,I want to do another couple of units with the Perry plastic light cavalry boxes, but that will be after the Papal army!

      Thanks Matt! Light cavalry basing 45mm x 90mm, Heavy cavalry 45mm x 60mm both with two horsemen,I think it works well to show the difference,I pinched it from James Roach's Olicanaland blog,it's also where I got close formed infantry ,6 figures on a 45mm x 45mm base which I think is nice and dense(except when I have levelled pikes, when it all goes out the window!)

    Great use of 'extra' bits and simple conversions to make a very interesting. almost (but not quite) uniformed. unit.
