Great Italian wars 30, Romagnol pike

Here is a unit of Romagnol pike, the best native pike of the Italian wars.

They were prominent in the armies of both the Papacy and Venice, I've shown them with Papal flags but I can easily swap those out for Venetian if needed. These are a mix of mainly Perry plastic mercenaries and the Pro Gloria/Warlord plastics,I wasn't that keen on the plastic landsknechts to start with but I really like the kit now, its given me a nice mix for an early 16th century unit. There are also some Foundry landsknechts and conquistadors mixed into the unit. There's also a few Artizan dopplesoldiers.

They've been great fun to paint (in the colours of my football team, Arsenal) and even though they're late, they were meant for the mercenary bonus round, I'm glad to have them. Thirty six 28mm figures and four flags and yes looking at the photos I realise I need to touch up the edges of the flags! The flags are from the excellent Pete's flags.
I have also painted a landsknecht commander on a single base.

He's a warlord games metal command figure,it was fun just painting one figure!

All the best Iain

  1. Magnificent Iain, even if they are in Arsenal colours. I’m a West Ham supporter, but I’m sure your colours look much better on the figures!

    1. Thanks Lee! I'm pretty sure you could paint landsknechts in virtually any football strip and they would look believable!

    2. Hi again Iain, reading back through this post I had not heard of Pro Gloria before and was not aware of warlords taking over the range. They are wonderful figures, full of character.

  4. Were papal troops well known for supporting Arsenal ?
Gret looking unit and being able to double for another army is a big bonus.
The excellent flags really do make this a spectacular period to play.

  6. Great stuff Iain. I love how they are all marching in close order, it works really well. The mixture of late 15th Century and later 16th Century Kit also looks good.

    1. Thanks Oli! Yes I thought the big sleeves and the earlier bodies gave a similar look to the illustrations I've seen of Marigano.

  10. I don't know what this "Arsenal" thing is that people are talking about (some sort of armory, I guess?) :P
    But the minis look great!

How do you store figures with long pikes like these?

    1. Thanks Fitz! Arsenal are a UK football club that originated in the Woolwich arsenal, their strip is red and white. I have lots of boxes deep enough for pikes!

  12. Great looking stuff Iain. I’d love to see some done in a Wolves scheme (actually, I probably wouldn’t to be honest). What gave you the initial hesitation with regard to the plastics?

    1. Thanks Lawrence! I'm doing a cavalry unit in black and yellow at the moment, close enough? I just wasn't that taken with them when I took them off the sprue but once I started mixing them with the Perry figures I liked them.
