This is the second of the two uhlan units, both based on the Perry plastic later British light dragoon bodies ( including command and trumpeter) in overalls and double breasted tunics with this unit in full dress Victrix czapkas from the Polish Guard cavalry set and some arms from them as well , a couple have ended up with wire lances and paper pennons. They've got knapsacks, which is non standard for Austrian cavalry but I think they're close enough!
Uhlan regiment no 2 Shwarzenberg or maybe not? I was working off these two illustrations but after painting the top of the czapkas red I actually think its Uhlan regiment no 3 archduke Charles, Im not going to repaint them so in spite of them needing a droopy plume I'll live with them as they are!
They're mounted on the ubiquitous Warlord ECW horses, I think the saddles look close enough to the first illustration? I buy loads of these horses when Warlord have sprue sales. Primed in black and the usual slap dash paint job, we aim for adequate and largely achieve it!
Next up? Not sure, more Great Italian wars,an AAR or terrain, not sure!
All the best
Iain

Lovely colourful unit, super additions to your Austrian forces, always like seeing Uhlans.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, me too, so glad Ive still got a Polish Lancer unit for my French Imperial Guard and a couple of Polish units yet to do!

Excellent use of the different kits to get the unit you want Iain, and the wire lances look the same as the others.
ReplyDeleteIts always fun kitbashing, maybe not the fastest thing but great fun!

Splendid brushwork, Iain! The red-topped fellows are RGT #3.
ReplyDeleteYes I rather think they are in spite of the illustration above! Nothing for it, I will no doubt have to do another unit!

Dashing looking Uhlans Iain!
ReplyDeleteMaybe call them, Regiment 2.5 😁
Thanks Ben, I like it!

Ah Uhlans, always make me think of playing Age of Empires 3 for some reason. Really awesome that Warlord does sprue sales, helps you get exactly what you want instead of having to buy a whole kit and end up with a ton of leftover bits.
ReplyDeleteYes its really useful, theres also online stores that break up kits so you can buy one or two sprues too!

Splendid looking unit Iain. I like Ben’s solution on the regimental number.
ReplyDeleteWere Uhlans typically recruited from the former Polish provinces in the same way that hussars were originally from the Hungarian realm?
Chris/Nundanket
Ben is on to something! Yes ethnicaly Polish, recruited from Galicia, which always sounds Spanish to me!

Nice work Iain and thanks for info on the horses, I had always wondered where they came from!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, yes the horses work out at about 70p each in a sale?

Excellent, the wire spears allow for dynamic poses while still remaining very functional (as in wargamer proof!) on the table.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience nothing is wargamer proof! Glad you cant tell which are kit made and whats scratch built!

Great work Iain. The lance pennants fluttering in the breeze is a definite highlight.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Lawrence, yes they work nicely dont they?

lovely painted miniatures/unit!
ReplyDeleteUhlan Regiment No. 2 “Schwarzenberg” typically had yellow distinctions (including the czapka top).
Uhlan Regiment No. 3 “Archduke Charles” is associated with red distinctions, including a red czapka top.
cheers!
Thanks Phil, I think uhlan regiment no 1 had the yellow distinctions? Still, good to keep us on our toes!
