War of three kingdoms / ECW 2 5 infantry regiments

So we move on into the 17th century with five pike and shot regiments for the british civil wars or with different flags thirty years wars, especially as if anything these are correct for the early part of the civil war  (helmets on shot and full corslets on the pike )so could move over to the continent.
Next to no flags at the moment, I was going to do at least one set but I have run out of time as I have to empty out the room and sand and stain the floor so they're moving out!
They are made up of an some of an Essex army I got off ebay and some warlord plastics and a single minifigs I've had forever !
A red regiment, a yellow, green, blue and grey regiment.

So there's a start, I've got one cavalry unit undercoated and some command that needs cleaning up . Maybe I'll finish my Napoleonic french infantry next ,but I've been saying that for some time!
All the best Iain

  1. Very nicely presented Pike and Shot army, Iain. At first I thought you had delved into Ancient/Medieval China with the Three Kingdoms title. :)

    1. Thanks Dean, no the war of three kingdoms was from around the time, 17th century anyway, England, Ireland and Scotland, three kingdoms, medieval China does sound interesting though ...

  2. Five regiments in one go? Incredible!

The figures look singly based yet placed on sabots. Are you planning double duty with the figures?

    1. Thanks Jonathan I've been plugging away for some time on these chaps and yes they're sabot based I've found my existing army of the period which I've based for black powder on big bases isn't sufficiently adaptable to other rules, these chaps will probably get a run out with pikemans lament (part of the lion rampant family of rules ) as well as blackpowder and others!

  3. Nice work!
ECW was one of those periods I thought I might like to do some day. But these days my focus is away from historical figures and back to fantasy and sci-fi for the most part. I am slowly building up a bit of an ECW-like dwarf "army" - small number of figures, and will most likely use them in small skirmish/rpg-like games rather than battles.

    1. Thanks Fitz! I find myself saying I'm never doing fantasy /sci fi again and then something grabs my fancy and I go "oh maybe. ." So never say never ECW dwarves sounds good!

    1. Thanks Phil, I'm missing your lovely vignettes for all your periods, maybe once the foot and horse are done and yes I always have problems with yellow so I'm really pleased how they came out.

    1. Thanks Michal, they'll do and if I give them Swedish flags it gives me an excuse to paint Polish hussars!

    1. Thanks Cyrus, very nice of you to say so I've still got to assemble most of the horse, so not even at the priming stage but getting this lot done does make me fancy putting together some cavalry and priming them.

  8. Very nice job! Looks like a solid group of men. I like the idea of having a color scheme for each regiment.

  10. Hi Iain, Great job on the pike & shot units, glad I looked at this post as I have been agonising over the balance of my own units and yours look just right. I think I may be 'overthinking' things a bit! Added your blog to my list so I don't miss any more posts :)

    1. Thanks Lee, I find over thinking balance of pike and shot is an occupational hazard of gaming the period!

  11. Looking pretty sharp! I like the saboted bases!

Dang, now I feel like I want to get back at my own ECW guys... There aren't THAT many to finish up!?

    1. Thanks Tim, I got fed up when I couldn't use my army for a different system, I think they work.
Can you drag yourself away from all your tallarns though? Although it would make a nice change. ...

    2. I actually NEED to switch things up, from time to time, or I get bored. Dropping a unit of pike or shot into the mix from time to time might just add enough colour and excitement to keep me going on what it turning out to be a rather ridiculously big project!
