Had another game at the club with John, I took the Austrians and he took the French, we played encounter from the scenarios in one hour wargaming, essentially we started with one unit each and rolled for reinforcements, the objective was the hill in the middle that had to be held at the end.
It took a while to build up forces and we accumulated cards, even when we didn't get troops! John sent in a unit of hussars but I was able to reply with a unit of cuirassiers support by Chevauleger and he lost a unit, in the meantime he got two units in march attack columns ( they are French! ) up onto the hill. I probably took too long bringing my troops into position and didn't get them into range fast enough as in line I would be shooting a lot more than John's assault columns.I made an assault on the hill which didn't end well as I forgot the bonus for fresh units do my troops tumbled down the hill , I regrouped as time was ticking, John attacked down the hill and by ingenious use of all the cards he'd acquired managed to withdraw back up the hill and leave me unable to assault the objective in the last go and so won the game. Excellent game , I didn't pay enough attention to the cards which added another dimension, the next time we play I'm going to try and put together an historical scenario rather than another one hour wargame one though.
All the best
Iain
Fine looking figures there Iain:)! Shame the Austrians couldn't get a last gasp injury time winner, but c'est la guerre. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next scenario wise.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve, it was fun anyway!

Sounds like a fun game, Iain, with plenty of good-looking figures hitting the tabletop. Interesting mechanic to have just one unit and then see what came on as reinforcements.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's an encounter scenario, I hadn't got all my troops on by the end!

Beautiful looking armies!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Michal!

Excellent, the V&F are doing very well for this sized game - did you use double numbers for the One Hour scenario?
ReplyDeleteI used the standard two brigades, 300 points a side and yes it went well!

John played a cunning game. You will be prepared for such trickery next time. Table looks terrific, Iain.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan, John's card playing was admirable!

That's the thing with cards added to the mix....bit like special abilities etc...I often forget them till half way through the game...usually, the reminder is when the opponent announces that he is doing x,y and z, because of his cards/abilities...and I realize I could/should have done the same, several turns earlier! As Steve says, c'est la guerre!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind cards as it adds another layer, I should have just been better at managing mine!

Cracking looking game with plenty of lovely looking figure on show. Austrians forces a bit unlucky but in a good game results are not too important.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, it was a great game whatever the result!

What a great concept Iain, I have never had a game only take one hour so it gives me food for thought.
ReplyDeleteWe played a scenario from one hour wargaming, sorry I wasn't that clear, but one hour wargames isn't a bad ruleset and worth the purchase price just based on all the scenarios at the back that are easily applicable with alternative rulesets!

A great looking game game Iain, good to see your figures in action.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Ray, good to get them out!

Good looking game Iain I’m not making any decisions on Austrians yet
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt, you know you want to, just the brigade army deal from Perry's, some cavalry and oh look it's free postage!

Smashing looking game Iain.
ReplyDeleteSo many things to think about!!!
Thanks very much Richard!

Fine looking troops and game; with the short playing time, you could perhaps have run it again?
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter, one hour wargaming scenario but Valour and Fortitude rules, it took a bit more than an hour! It's your scenario book I'm turning to for the next game!

A great game Iain. I think it is a bit of a knack getting used to card-based games and remembering what you have ready to play and how best to play them.
ReplyDeleteFun game and I think your right but I suppose you should be able to think about the cards while playing?

I am permanently amazed by how much you get to play and with such satisfactory results, judging by the pictures. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Suber!

Beaut stuff. You got those new Austrian infantry into action quick smart!
ReplyDeleteRegards, James
Thanks James, actually this game preceded my new Austrians, it means I don't have to have Landwehr if I don't want too!

Great looking game as usual.
ReplyDeleteI think VandF probably needs a custom card deck to better remember what bonuses they grant. 😀
Thanks Stew, after playing dead mans hand with a custom deck I think you're probably right!

Awesome looking game Iain, and sounds like the cards added another element.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave, I think they did!

A great looking game Iain…
ReplyDeleteI also find I forget to check my cards or the cards I have would work better for the enemy but are useless for me 🙄
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly, yes it's easily done in the heat of battle but all good fun!

Must actually play these rules sometimes, looks like fun!
