I'd bought an MDF chapel from TT combat at Salute ( which I have just finished building) in the meantime I came across this plastic church second hand in a railway model shop for not much money and decided to make a couple of adjustments to it and repaint and base it.
I quite like the size of this church and the door sizes to my mind seem to work pretty well. I changed the level of the tower and put in a new lower platform to enable 28mm figures to look right, I also covered up the clock faces with some left over bits of chimney from my Italian church with a bit of plastic on top.
The figures are British civil war types, Warlord and Essex. It's a bit big for St Mary the Virgin in 1471 and I don't think it had a tower until later in the 15th century but it will do for me and will do service for the British civil war and elsewhere .
There will be some painted figures at some point.
All the best Iain
A nice model that has been ‘done up’ sensitively to look very natural. A good find, I am a regular visitor to the second hand corner in a nearby (25 miles!!!) rail model shop, where there is always something that catches the eye.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm, the shop is essentially a hobby for the chap who is retired,he can't help buying stuff there is less than two square feet to stand by the door and you point out and ask the price of things piled up high from the floor! Is the factory you showed in a recent post from this local shop?
DeleteBest Iain
Yes, together with some kits that need making up. But the rail shop has some surprise items, like a small bunker!
DeleteYour church is a real beauty, Iain! I like the scale of the thing and your weathering effects are just right.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan! It's a nice size isn't it? I'm glad you like the finish!

Ooh, that's lovely that is. As the chaps above said, very sensitively altered. Looks just right. The only thing you can find in second hand shops round here are someone else's old slippers.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! My nephew found an unusual star wars figure in a French charity shop which he later sold for thousands of pounds,me I'm happy to find something useful!

Very nice work! I can't even tell where you made the changes and adjustments you mentioned. Looks like a good size, too. Big enough, but not too big.
ReplyDeleteThanks Fitz! Glad you can't see the edges! Yes a good size, does make me worry that the other one I have is a bit too big!

A lovely job in pouting that together Iain. I really like the greys you have used on this, as I find mine can come out a bit too dark for my liking. Can I ask what colours you used.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence! I tend to use emulsion paint on terrain and in this case I had some paint left over from painting the outside of the house, my wife chose a Farrow and Ball colour,"Stony Ground" but as A Farrow and Ball don't make exterior paint and B they're some of the most expensive paint around I mixed it by eye using a white smooth masonry paint as a base. On the model I did a wash of watered down emulsion that was like raw umber but only in places and then dry brushed with a straw like colour,I hope that helps?!

Thanks Iain, that combination really works well. I seem to have a problem with greys and always end up going to dark. I’ll have a look at the local games workshop store and see whether I can pick up something similar.
DeleteA great looking piece!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Peter!

It's all been said above Iain! Lovely model, lovely finish and scales up very well for 28mm, a gem of a find.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lee! Yes scales surprisingly well,I think the fact the doors work helps enormously!

Nice work on the church, reminds me of home ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul! I hope that's a good thing!

Gerat bit of rendering and imo so obviously English. Good find too btw.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe! I was happy to get it( even though I'd already bought it's MDF big brother!)

Nice one! I bought one these about 6 months back and hadn't considered the period implication, luckily(?) it's been languishing in the loft while I try and get the 25mm ECW armies up to scratch to fight over it. Noting you got it for ECW and WotR - and I'm fairly new to your blog - how about a post on these sometime?
ReplyDeleteThanks Rob! I'm not working on any WotR or ECW at the moment but I do have some earlier posts, December 2017 there are a couple of posts on my WotR armies and my British civil war posts are in November 2017 and January 2018,I have been playing the civil war but not posting, I'll try and remedy that next time out!

Well I have to say that looks rather good to me, splendid work Iain.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Michael! I am currently working on another terrain post that I know you have and hope to post it relatively soon,he says sounding accidentally mysterious!

Intriguing! Looking forward to seeing what that is.

Oh I am envious of this Iain - a lovely piece for the tabletop!
ReplyDeleteThanks Oli! Like I said to Mark below, they do turn up on eBay relatively inexpensively,I was happy to get it in a shop so that I could judge the size properly.

Good job Iain, what is brand of this church??
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark! It's a Hornby Country church kit R599, good luck finding it in New Zealand! Although there is one on eBay,I think the bid is £2.20 at the moment, maybe the postage cost wouldn't be too great?!

good job, I see you have others in the pipeline behind. I can't wait to see what it looks like on a table set up with some Battle report.
ReplyDeleteThanks! That's eagle eyed of you, they're some MDF Italian wars buildings, which are a little way off and I certainly hope to have the new church feature in a battle report soon!

Nice bit of plastic recycling Iain!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith! Nice to do my bit for the environment!

You push out this stuff so swiftly mate, makes me embarrassed to see my own terrain collection just languishing in primer....
ReplyDeleteI've had lots of terrain in various states for ages, you have to lay down figures and terrain like wine, until they mature!

Very nicely done Iain.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Simon!
