Terrain 1

I've been a bit embarrassed about the terrain I have, most of it is semi finished, done enough to play with but much less finished than the figures also I've been concentrating on figures/armies .
Now I think I need to start addressing this. As a start I've decided to knock out some roads and rivers, the roads are about 2 1/2" wide and the rivers are more like 3 1/2"wide , they'r strips of vinyl with some sharp sand and emulsion. I think they're good enough, I will add some flock to tie them in with the board and my general basing at some point and I could do with giving the rivers a coat of gloss varnish but for a couple of evenings work they'll do.
I used the roads in a pike and shot battle last night and didn't have enough!

Next up, more terrain I think( I've been inspired by Ray on don't throw a 1 to build a walled Italian town) and maybe some french napoleonic line infantry, maybe!
All the best Iain

  1. Always good to have some terrain options, like those roads and rivers. It can be hard to know how much you need and in what configurations.

Anyway, your pieces look good and serviceable.

    1. Thanks Fitz, I'll take seviceable! Yes it's guaranteed you'll have too much of one kind and not enough of another, I'm just glad I'm not still using brown paper as stand ins!

  2. Looking good, Iain! One can never have too much terrain, right?

Will be get a glimpse of your recent P&S battle? I hope so.

    1. Not till you fill up the shed and possibly the loft! No report on the recent P&S battle I've got to finish basing my command and the terrain isn't up to scratch but I'm hoping to get the Italian wars figures out for a first go, a little more terrain and some flags and we're good a bit short on light cavalry but otherwise good.

  3. Funny, I was just contemplating a road project myself. Are the vinyl strips flexible? I think the river sections look especially nice. The roads will look the business with the obligatory grass down the sides.

    1. It didn't take too long once I had a game /deadline yes they are flexible, it's left over vinyl flooring from a previous kitchen from let's say a while ago (we're two kitchens down the line!) The plan was a light sprinkling of sharp sand onto pva and then emulsion/water based house paint but the sand in the bag was soaking so I ended up trowling it on ,so I don't know how flexible, a bit, if you need it more I'd do caulk and a some dry(!) Sharp sand.

  5. Nice work on those pieces, Iain. I'm too lazy and go for pre-painted stuff :)

  6. Thanks Dean, I'm just too tight to spend money on terrain, I always think I could make that and save the money for miniatures, generally forgetting the time element!

    1. Thanks Cyrus, agreed, its no use having lovely figures if the terrain is rubbish and decent terrain will make ok figures look better!

  10. My roads need work too - just pieces of felt right now. I really need to winterize then up.
I like the effect you came up with on yours, the mid looks very convincing.
