Des and Ben came over and we had a game of Valour and Fortitude based on the battle of Lodi, I know not strictly Napoleonic and the French are anachronistic, I also had to use Landwehr to substitute for Grenzers but still better than just a meeting encounter game I think, it was a scenario Des found on the Internet he chose the Austrians, he had two Grenz units in Lodi three line units , a light cavalry (chevaulegers) and an artillery piece and needed to hold the bridge and not lose over 50% , the French had a brigade of two units of Guard plus an artillery piece, another brigade with three line units and a light cavalry unit ( chasseurs) and a brigade with three infantry units and an artillery unit, all played on my venerable 6' x 4' table with no trees becausewe ran out of time to find them !

Battle of Lodi Valour and Fortitude Napoleonic 73
As a birthday treat earlier in the month we went to the Wallace collection for lunch, it's a free to enter grand house in central London bequeathed to the nation in 1897, lots of baroque and roccoco and Canalettos, which is of course good for Venetian terrain! But the main reason I mention it here is for the arms and armour collection, much of which I'm sure you'll recognise, worth a visit if you're in the area and the foods pretty good too!
Right Keith,I've done my bit for the tourism industry, other than that painting has taken a hit, just managed to get the replacement hardwood, double glazed door that I'd cut down, planned, primed and undercoated off the table before the game, DIY jobs have piled up in my absence plus the garden is eating some of my time , still I've almost finished preparing four battalions of Bavarians and trying to get terrain built so I can paint it in Dave Stones Summer terrain challenge which runs through July and August, last time I did it, I was pretty productive so hopefully the same thing will happen this time!
All the best
Iain

10pm seems a late start to me, although I suppose it isn't dark until 9pm for you at the moment. A fun game Iain, although it would be nice to read an AAR where the Austrians actually win something. I'll be interested to get your impressions of Midgard once you have had a game.
ReplyDeleteA 10pm start seems a very late to me too! I am usually long in bed by that time.
Delete10pm in the week is after my bedtime too! Saturday night, we met up about 7pm onwards , I had to nip out and pick my daughter up from work at 8pm, then we were drinking tea and chatting in the garden, catching up and finally got a game!

Lovely looking game, Iain and excellent photos of the armour!
ReplyDeleteThanks and yes nice armour!

Good game, new collections, and a museum tour, what more could anyone ask? Well, Keith might ask for an Austrian victory.
ReplyDeleteI know, as I said, it's a historical rematch and pretty tough for the Austrians but we all had fun anyway!

What a great armour!
ReplyDeleteLovely game too.
Thanks a lot Michal!

Looks like a nice spot for lunch Iain! Despite our impressive scenery, I have nothing to compete with that sort of tourist attraction!
ReplyDeleteI have no comment re the Austrians...it is a mystery to me how they held onto their empire as long as they did!
You have to give the Austrians full marks for resilience, they kept coming back and getting better, poor against the revolutionary armies by 1809 they were beginning to hold their own and stuck to it to end on the winning side!

Good to see you able to get a game in at long last, even if kick-off time was at or past bedtime;)! Some nice presents too to say the least:). Ah, the Wallace Collection, I keep forgetting to check this out when I'm in London, so must try harder. Our daughter worked close by when at Google, so would often pop in over lunch, for a browse and a bit of culture vulture vibe.
ReplyDeleteBit late but all good! Definitely worth a visit next time you're in the area!

Hope you had a great birthday Iain, and some amazing armor on show.
ReplyDeleteThe battle went well for the French, and great all those units you worked on out for a game.
Yes I had a lovely time, just nice to get the toys in the table for the first time this year!

Lovely to see a 10 pm start, the hunger for a game clearly being the priority :-) The mass of figures does of course look splendid - also very interested in Des moving to 6mm / Epic, a path that I have trodden and then retreated from a couple of times, only to re-tread it, but the practicalities at the end of the day must win through and at least he will still get to see his 28’s.
ReplyDeleteYes , I thought that would be of interest to you as it's what you've covered on your blog, as he'd can only fit a card table in he definitely needs a smaller game and as he pointed out to me, he only played his napoleonic and pike and shot at mine anyway! He's already talking about building a 28mm Midgard warband !

Super looking game, very nice indeed and the armour photos are very interesting, great stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks on both counts Donnie!

nice looking game. I agree that a scenario is better than just playing a meeting engagement again. 😁
ReplyDeleteYour friends move is his loss and your gain huh?
I ordered Pillage as well for Dark Ages. and Midgard. LOL. I'll be interested if you give it a try.
Glad we're in agreement about scenarios, it's my nephew's figures so still in the family! I think we will get to Midgard and Pillage, just don't hold your breath!

Great looking game and museum photos, Iain! I've only played V&F a couple of times (when my buddy hosted); I looked at the rules, and it seems having a lot of units in a brigade helps with the break tests - which seem brutal.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean, when things go wrong it happens pretty rapidly, brutal but you get a conclusion which I like, it's a bit blackpowders faster/meaner cousin!

Good looking game. Enjoyed the armour.
ReplyDeleteThanks Richard, worth a quick visit if you're in town?

Wonderful AAR! It captures the drama of the bridge crossing perfectly. The moment the French finally storm forward under fire really brings the history to life, and the terrain adds so much atmosphere. Looking forward to your next engagement!
ReplyDeleteBesides, the Wallace collection is awesome, thanks for sharing such amazing pics!
Thanks very much, it's a cinematic hobby in many ways I think, with our imagination filling in the gaps!

One thing you have to give the Austrians in the Napoleonic wars is determination. I read once that the Austrian's were more motivated by the hope not to lose rather than the confidence they would win. They came very close to winning in several battles but when your enemy is a tactical genius then you are in trouble. I do wonder how Wellington would have done in Spain if he faced Napoleon rather than his Marshals.
ReplyDeleteYour game looks great iain and I hope to do one using V&F but Austria v Bavaria.
Cheers
Chris
Thanks Chris, they were also slightly shafted by having to employ members of the royal family as army commanders, especially after Charles was frozen out, looking forward to your V & F game, busily assembling Bavarians at the moment!

Great looking game Iain! How was maneuvering units like on that 6x4 table?
ReplyDeleteI've not heard of that museum so all of the lovely Wallace collection is new to me and looks so good!
All good on a 6' x 4' table, could have bigger armies but with the pinch point of the bridge you're a bit restricted!

Nice one Iain, must give Lodi a go myself :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark, you should!

lovely display of painted units and game!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Phil!

A splendid looking battle Iain but perhaps the french needed more time ? I’ll check out the house next time I’m done for a trip to London 👍
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt, the French managed to achieve their objectives within the time ( which from my point of view was good!) Definitely worth a visit when you're next in London!
