Pike and shot battle Great Italian wars 50

Had another game at the club and fancied ringing the changes a bit, we still used a scenario from One Hour Wargame but this time used Warlord game's Pike and Shot , which is a derivative of Blackpowder and troops from my Italian wars collection. We also used James Roach's unit profiles from his Olicanalad blog.

The scenario we chose at random had a hill in the middle

The winner was whoever was in control of the hill at the end of eight turns, John held it for six turns, I got it off him in the seventh and was still there at the end of  turn eight , the variable reinforcements rule didn't help me much John got all his troops on early but half of mine hadn't turned up until the end by which time I'd already won the game with just the landsknecht unit.

Great to get the Italian wars figures out on the table, I've even picked up some more landsknechts for another block or four, do I need them ? Good question , not really but I want them? Working on some other Italian wars stuff so who knows there might be something apart from Napoleonics painted, not for the next post though!

All the best

  1. Fantastic looking battle Iain, and nice win in the end, if the unit was that effective I can fully understand wanting another one ! LOL

  3. Lovely, I had not thought of Pike and Shotte outside the ECW setting of pike and musket sleeves - those are really nice figures, so I suppose the answer is yes, more landsknechts!

    1. A bit more varied as far as formations are concerned, so more of a transitional period from late medieval, which is half the fun? Thanks for the landsknecht vote, especially as you have contributed men for the pike block!

  4. Awesome looking battle and figures again, Iain! Someday I need to get my P&S figures out - maybe even swap out colors for something like Wars of Religion - for varieties sake.

  6. Great stuff Iain, it's hard to beat an Italian Wars battle - and of course you need that extra unit of Landsknecht, you can never have enough!

    1. I am suitably admonished! Sorry about that,we both started with a unit each(in my case my Spanish Colunna) and we rolled for reinforcements, which barely happened for me and John got every go, as the hill was the objective he put his best(Swiss) unit on it which destroyed my Spanish, although they did some damage,my artillery weren't much use, I managed to get a landsknecht unit, charged the weakened Swiss and occupied the hill just before the last go and clung on for a lucky victory with half my army only just turning up!

  11. Lovely looking units, but one hell of a crush around that hill. Were the Landsknechts a bit OP?

  13. Lovely stuff Iain, and one of the best things about the Italian Wars are the flags. Are they Pete's Flags, by any chance?

    1. Thanks Peter, pretty well with James Roach's stats, the colunnia is a good flexible unit but isn't super human, so there is a nice mix of unit types which I find is one of the interesting points of this period.

  19. Nice game of "King of the Castle"! (Albeit a bit bloodier than when we were younger.)

Love to see all those colourful flags and blocks of infantry.
