Great Italian wars 32 jinnetts and Maximilian

Another unit of light cavalry, this time it is a unit of jinnetts or genitors, Spanish light cavalry armed with javelins and  leather shields in the distinctive heart shape.
These are old glory figures,I know people comment on perry figures having a lot of flash but I have to say there was an awful lot to do cleaning these chaps up, drilling out hands etc and on this side of the pond they are no longer quite so economical, they're not far off the same price for cavalry. That said I do like them,  they are characterful and lively and are a pleasure to paint up. The flag is a medieval Catalan flag which might be slightly anachronistic but I think works well enough and to me close enough is good enough!

So another light cavalry unit done. Next up my Curtgeld, which isn't an orc but is instead an elderly Maximilian from Warlord games. You'd have to say most of the Rennaisance princes acted in an abominabal manner, absolute power, unbridled ambition,no check to their excess is lets face it not a recepie for a stable human.

Points wise 8x 28mm mounted figures plus flag, 28mm figure plus Curtgeld, 80+1+5+20, so 106 points.
All the best Iain

  1. Great Stuff Iain, the Jinetes are a really useful unit, your Spanish will be glad to have them!

I know what you mean about OG figures, they can be a lot of work to prepare to paint.

How any units have you added to your Italian Wars project during this contest?

  6. Nice looking dudes. Drilling out hands is so tedious... the flag looks cool and billowing and that’s what counts. 😀

  7. Very nice!

It's been a while since I bought/painted any Perry minis - but I don't recall them ever having much in the way of flash...? Maybe they sent me all the good ones!

I find Old Glory always very hit and miss with the quality of the sculpts and castings.

These, however, turned out LOOKING just fabulous!

    1. Thanks Tim! I have never had any problems with Perry figures I just thought I was lucky as people often complain about them,I like Old Glory infantry, they're good value and less fiddly!

  11. More fine figures there Iain. Old Glory are getting on a bit know so we must forgive them a little flash here and there, they have much character. Re the Perry's yes, lots of those tiresome little casting 'worms' can be annoying if you miss one on the face or hands, but without them they could not achieve the incredible level of detail. Drilling out hands I agree can also be annoying, even on my 40mm's I have to drill out the standard bearers hands.Your collection is coming along at some speed now Iain :)

  12. Lovely work Iain. Drilling out hands is one of my pet dislikes as well. No check to their excesses? They obviously never got married.

    1. Thanks Lawrence! Yes drilling out hands is rotten,Henry VIII is a contemporary and was one of the princes I was thinking of,I believe he was married once or twice!

  14. Lovely Genitors! I missed that OG even did any; I may have to add some to my next OG order. Yes, it is a pain drilling out the hands. I did lot of that on my recent ECW pikemen, but once I did it the wire pikes fit perfectly and glued in with ease!

    1. Thanks Peter! Yes,you should add them when you have your army card, the stradiots are even worse, you have to glue the tiny hands on before you then drill them out,I didn't mind drilling out the landsknechts and Swiss so much, fitting the pikes seemed to be worth it!
