Here are five Foundry 28mm cataphracts, lovely figures if a little on the small side by today's standards. They are the start of a Dux Bellorum army to go with my Picts, Irish and pagan Saxons, they're on a 120mm sabot base so I can use them for Impetus, Hail Caesar, To the Strongest or Lion Rampant, all the armies are about the size of Norms pocket armies so would need combining or expanding to make a Hail Caesar army, not impossible! Each one is individually based on a Perry plastic base that fits in my homemade balsa and mdf sabot base .
I like the figures, nice to paint and there are some more late Roman units on the paint table so they should be along shortly. For the benefit of Mr Freitag these were purchased 2018/19 from Colours.
And now for something completely different,Space Wolves! I put this little army in a box and gave up on them when the "new" codex came out in 2009 and decided I'd given up on 40k and GW and haven't bought a 40k figure for myself since then. These won't get used for 40k but Xenos Rampant these were bought from the 20th century onwards. Plastic, metal and some very geriatric scout conversions! Lovely figures to paint, I have to say, lots of axes instead of chainswords as I wanted yo be similar to the cover art of the codex, but couldn't resist a bit of red!
Next up, probably more late Romans, although more elderly sci-fi armies are also trundling along
All the best
Iain
The Cataphracts look excellent Iain, and really like the different armour colours, adds a lot of interest to draw in the eye. Great work on the Space Wolves, and totally agree that the added axes brings them more inline with the artwork.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave , on both counts!

You have been busy at the painting desk! Both cataphracts and Space Wolves look great. I am sure you must have older figures in The Lead Pile. 2018/2019 seems like yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan, yes I checked I've got quite a few Ral Partha landsknechts from about 1979 that still need to be painted/ finished off!

Foundry sculpts have "shrunk" over the years, but still possess a unique charm that keeps them relevant--particularly when we'll rendered, such as your cataphracts. Painted the little guys, Epic 40k, wayy back when. That collection also went fallow and moved on rather than keep up with the GW updates and I wasn't interested in other sci fi systems.
ReplyDeleteThe Foundry figures vary in size , I fund the dark ages and some of the Napoleonic ranges a bit slight but the Italian wars and English Civil war figures are fine?

I love the Foundry range of figures - its my go to for Napoleonic's. But I could be tempted to use them for a Hail Caesar Roman project now as well. They look great - as do your Space Wolves.
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon! I find the Napoleonics vary in size( I have some very diminutive Austrian grenadiers! ) of course their Italian wars range is still excellent!

Congrats on the space Nazis, they look ace, as do the cataphracts tbh. You are a busy bee!
ReplyDeleteI try to keep busy, so I don't get into trouble! Thanks Mark!

Fantastic looking Cataphracts sir!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Michal!

Lovely work on the Roman, very nice unit. Your Space Wolves look good as well, I have a box of them somewhere in the "to do" pile.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, there must be lots of space marines in various to do piles!

Great looking figures all round Iain.
ReplyDeleteFoundry figures may be smaller by comparison but their prices have kept pace.
Thanks Richard, yes not cheap but actually lots of other ranges seem to be catching up in cost?

I know some of the older GW models are going for good money these days, so you might have a nice surprise in the stash. I actually like the old 28’s (25mm) better than today’s bigger offerings, but all scales seem to have grown a bit.
ReplyDeleteI do still have some old GW stuff left and my nephew keeps telling me how it's worth lots! Scale creep, can't get away from it!

Beautifully done Iain. Foundry figures may be on the slightly smaller side, but they have stood the test of time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence, which is a good thing for you as you no doubt have a number of armies of them still to paint!

Lovely work and the scenery in some of the photos is excellent too. I never had a GW period so know nothing about the figure ranges etc!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, I did a post about the terrain a while ago, I guess I started with D&D and fantasy, GW naturally followed?!

Some nice looking Space Marines, quite funny to see them contrasted against the historical ruins!
ReplyDeleteThanks SD, funnily enough the building was started for 40k!

Nice job all around. I think the GW miniatures are a perfect fit for Xenos Rampant. 😀
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Stew!

I do like your beautiful and very impressive cataphracts!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Phil!

Nice work Iain!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Mike!

Very nicely done. Good placing of those cataphracts on the sabot base. Very dynamic.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris, they're all set up as a V shape with the central figure at the point, seems to generally work?

Most unexpected, and that makes everything even better. The change of subject proves that you are able to develop your art on such different ranges, that's really commendable, congratulations!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Suber, thought you'd like some 40k, even if it isn't Rogue Trader figures!

I do like the Foundry Late Roman/Dark Age ranges …
ReplyDeleteThey are very easy to paint… Which is always a good thing 😁
I think some of your Space Wolves are older than some of my colleagues 🤣
All the best. Aly
Yes I like the Late Roman/dark age range too, the scouts are from the 1980s so I imagine you do have some colleagues younger than them! I have worked with some people born in the twenty first century which seems ridiculous at first! Difficult when you turn into Colonel Blimp!

Nice work. Those Foundry figures are quite lovely.
ReplyDeleteThanks, nice to wprk with!

Lovely work all round Iain…. Between Napoleonics I’m still painting Tallarn it is quite fun getting old stuff back out and giving it a new lead of life 👍
ReplyDeleteA new lead of life? Hmm, thanks Matt, yes it's quite fun time travelling, in a safe way!
