Valour and Fortitude Austrians and French Napoleonic 53

Had another game at the club with John, I took the Austrians and he took the French, we played encounter from the scenarios in one hour wargaming, essentially we started with one unit each and rolled for reinforcements, the objective was the hill in the middle that had to be held at the end.

It took a while to build up forces and we accumulated cards, even when we didn't get troops! John sent in a unit of hussars but I was able to reply with a unit of cuirassiers support by Chevauleger and he lost a unit, in the meantime he got two units in march attack columns ( they are French! ) up onto the hill. I probably took too long bringing my troops into position and didn't get them into range fast enough as in line I would be shooting a lot more than John's assault columns.I made an assault on the hill which didn't end well  as I forgot the bonus for fresh units do my troops tumbled down the hill , I  regrouped as time was ticking, John attacked down the hill and by ingenious use of all the cards he'd acquired managed to withdraw back up the hill and leave me unable to assault the objective in the last go and so won the game. Excellent game , I didn't pay enough attention to the cards which added another dimension, the next time we play I'm going to try and put together an historical scenario rather than another one hour wargame one though.

All the best

  1. Fine looking figures there Iain:)! Shame the Austrians couldn't get a last gasp injury time winner, but c'est la guerre. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next scenario wise.

  2. Sounds like a fun game, Iain, with plenty of good-looking figures hitting the tabletop. Interesting mechanic to have just one unit and then see what came on as reinforcements.

    1. Yes, it's an encounter scenario, I hadn't got all my troops on by the end!

  5. Excellent, the V&F are doing very well for this sized game - did you use double numbers for the One Hour scenario?

  7. That's the thing with cards added to the mix....bit like special abilities etc...I often forget them till half way through the game...usually, the reminder is when the opponent announces that he is doing x,y and z, because of his cards/abilities...and I realize I could/should have done the same, several turns earlier! As Steve says, c'est la guerre!

  8. Cracking looking game with plenty of lovely looking figure on show. Austrians forces a bit unlucky but in a good game results are not too important.

  9. What a great concept Iain, I have never had a game only take one hour so it gives me food for thought.

    1. We played a scenario from one hour wargaming, sorry I wasn't that clear, but one hour wargames isn't a bad ruleset and worth the purchase price just based on all the scenarios at the back that are easily applicable with alternative rulesets!

  14. A great game Iain. I think it is a bit of a knack getting used to card-based games and remembering what you have ready to play and how best to play them.

I think VandF probably needs a custom card deck to better remember what bonuses they grant. 😀

I also find I forget to check my cards or the cards I have would work better for the enemy but are useless for me 🙄
