We had a go at a larger Lion Rampant battle with four retinues on each side, I took the Yorkist side with Edward IV , Gloucester, Essex and Hastings, I didn't have the right banner for Hastings ( I appear to have lost it!) But I had another Yorkist flag , Essex took Edward's flag and he took his long banner. Des had Warwick, Oxford ,Montague and Exeter. We added some special rules for fog and also for treachery that Des found somewhere on the web.
We rolled for weather and got fog, I managed to activate and move some of Gloucester on my right wing and Edward who was behind Essex in the centre who had failed to activate . I got three units through as we allowed interpenetration .Des failed a few activations but got his left units to move , we had an additional rule for fog , on a one or a two on a d6 you would go left or right instead of where you wanted so we already had a slightly messy and confused board! On my next activation I tried to bring a unit of archers from Edward's retinue around a unit in front but blunded into the unit and rolled a 1 so cried treachery and my two units fought it out, inflicted a casualty each and the rear unit retreated! Oh dear! We continued blundering around on both sides until the mist cleared a bit and we were at least able to shoot , albeit at reduced range.
Gloucester and Exeter slugged it out and we had a few inconclusive duels between leaders, time was running out and I pushed Edward forward to try and challenge Warwick but unfortunately in the meantime came across Montague who killed Edward and the game was over!
Fun game system that worked well even with four retinues each, we remembered that the archers were expert this time and they worked better, well when the weather let us! Too many photos but I didn't know which ones to cut!
Most of our figures are Perry plastic although Des acquired some unknown already painted including some minifigs. There are also some of my venerable citadel 100 years war archers painted in 1980 on 20 x 20 bases to give them some height that later got suplemented with various other press ganged metal figures ( Ral Partha?) and a load of Hat reconquista plastic figures with Perry plastic heads and archers arms who together with some home cast Prince August bodies with the same additions to give me a basic impetus army that never got properly finished although the French one did.I may go back and finish up the English, it's mostly basing after all, saying that it hasn't happened in the last 44 years! In the meantime I've purchased enough Perry Miniatures (mostly plastic) to build both English and French 100 years war armies, in my defence the old 25mm armies are more Crecy and Poitiers rather than the Agincourt era that the new armies will cover, we do all know that as has happened in this battle, an archer is an archer and they're bound to all get used together, which is another reason to finish off the old ones I guess! Oh well!
All the best
Iain
What a fantastic game!
ReplyDeleteLove to see close up photos with great painted minis.
Best regards
Thanks very much Michal!

The fog would have really changed the complexion of the game. I'll bet it was a surprise to you both when you rolled that one up. Lovely looking game Iain.
ReplyDeleteThe fog and treachery worked really well, all added to the fun!

4 retinues a side? that's a lot of retinues.
ReplyDeletecool pictures! must of been a big battle,
I don't remember needing dice counters in LR, but it's been awhile. now I'm gonna have to go check...😁
Yes a lot of retinues on each side but worked surprisingly well, it's usually figure removal in Lion Rampant but as some if the bases had multi figures it seemed easier to use die?

Excellent looking battle Iain, and the extra rules for weather and treachery added another level. As for finishing units, don't we all have ones like that we should really get round to ! LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave, yes the treachery and fog rules worked really well and you're probably right we've all got these kind of units knocking around half done!

Iain, enjoyed all the photos, it seems like a good old tussle, do the Rampant rules offer a longer life to units and more time in battle than other sets might give? Great fog rules and of course the cry of treachery ….. delightful! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe rules worked surprisingly well, the stumbling around in the fog was funny too!

Multiplayer "Rampant" games are a different sort of animal. We've done both the "Lion" and "Lament" versions and have not been disappointed. The mix of figures looks more than fine--and right--to me (what a table!).
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed, it surprised me how well it went to be honest!

Excellent looking game Iain. Makes it interesting when weather plays a part.
ReplyDeleteThanks Richard, it was so important in the real battle we thought it worth trying something!

Eight retinues!? Wow! Looks like it was quite the epic battle! How long did it take you to play it out!?
ReplyDeleteThanks Tim, normal kind of time, a couple of hours? The death of one of the generals brought it to an abrupt end but it worked pretty well!

An impressive looking game Iain…
ReplyDeleteIt’s nice to see that Lion Rampant can handle so many retinues…
We have only really played four up to now…
All the best. Aly
Thanks Aly, I was surprised at how well it held together, no doubt helped by us having played the game relatively recently!

Donnie McGibbon wrote Great looking game, WotR is always one of my to do projects but never quite made it yet!! So many great pictures to pore over!
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie, I was worried there were too many!

A fantastic looking battle Iain and a suitably WotR way for it to come to a conclusion!
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, right on both counts!

Great looking game and figures, Iain. I need to get my WotR stuff back on the table again - especially since I've returned to the Rampant family of rules, of which Lion Rampant works most excellently for WotR.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean, agreed it gives a good game for the period!
