Austrian combined grenadier battalions Napoleonic 55

Two battalions of Victrix Austrian combined grenadiers, fun chaps to paint . I've tried to use the facing colours of the regiments I've painted, primed grey, wet brushed white, brown and black are Liquatex inks to help speed thing up, flag poles are time consuming but worth it I think?  Probably shouldn't have a flag for a combined  unit but it looks good so I'm  keeping  it! Another forty-eight added to my Napoleonic total I've got  more Austrian grenadiers but some of them are Foundry so a bit diminutive but I guess they'll get done eventually, together with Hungarians, grenzers and Hungarian Grenadiers and more Austrian line and of course, lots of cavalry!

This gives me another  48 Napoleonic infantry towards my total, running 235 I'm going to have to get my finger out , difficult as I'm only painting one evening a week ( when I'm home) at best! I'm busily assembling pike and cavalry for the great Italian wars, Napoleonic Hungarians and Grenzers while  still painting Napoleonics, Late Romans and looking hard at the box with Montrose's army in it, oh and cutting off and assembling 100 years war French cavalry and finding time to push the ruined buildings along!

All the best

 Iain

  4. Your combined grenadiers look great, Iain. I remember how fiddly doing the flagpoles is....I had to paint about thirty of them myself, but they do look good, and of course every Napoleonic unit should have a flag!
In other news....you have got a LOT of balls in the air!

  5. Excellent work there Iain and the flag pole was certainly worth the effort. Whilst the Grenadiers didn't have flags, they look all the better for having one IMHO. Afterall it's your house, your game, so do what you want!

  6. Beautiful work, and the fun thing about combined grenadiers of some nations is you get to keep yourself entertained with a variety if facing colours. Were these Victrix figures fiddly to put together?

    1. Thanks Lawrence, yes the varied facing colours were fun, I didn't find these as fiddly as the earlier French infantry figures, there are more two armed figures than the Perry set but overall not too complicated !

  9. Great looking Austrians, Iain. I like how these Victrix sets come with full command, including mounted officers.

  12. Great looking units Iain, sounds like you have a lot going on in the background as well for multiple time periods, so to get this much done on only one day a week, is no small feat.

    1. Thanks Richard, they'd be fine for the Revolutionary period, they're about the only unit you could use in essentially the same uniform from 1792 to 1815!

  16. Nothing like spreading yourself thin 😀 lots of projects at one time is fine in my book, today I be painted Naps, some samurai and made some ww2 ships ! I keep thinking about Austrians but I’m not convinced I need another Napoleonic army ?

    1. Come on Matt, of course you need another Napoleonic army, with so many projects you'd barely notice one!

  17. Looking good Iain, my Austrians are all metal Hinchliffe/Minifigs 52mm how tricky did you fing assembling the Victrix ones. I fould their Bavarians frustrating top assemble.

    1. Thanks Chris, I thought they were alright, almost as good as Perry, mostly add head and backpack, it's the older ones I find difficult, I'm surprised the Bavarians were frustrating as they are quite recent?

    2. Hi Iain, sorry about my mistakes. I should (obviously) have said 25mm figures not 52mm and find not 'fing'. Another 'bad hair day!'
With the Victrix figures, it is working out what part goes with what figure and I got very confused with their sprues. I accept it is probably just me. I also found some arms not attaching that well with the torsos which meant a lot of gap filling.

I am now being frustrated trying to assemble a Perry's gun & carriage. The website provides a picture https://www.perry-miniatures.com/product/bav-24-four-horse-limber-with-6-pounder/ but I am struggling with which bit goes where. I don't remember having this difficulty with Hinchliffe artillery back in the 1970's - but then I was a lot younger!

    3. I don't think Victrix are quite as clear as Perry, I had to assemble a hinchcliffe wagon at the same time as a Perry wagon a couple of years ago, I found them to be both equally difficult, I suspect there might be just the suggestion of a rose tinted view of the past!

    4. Hi again Iain, I agree with you regarding Victrix/Perry plastic minatures. As for the metal Hinchliffe/Perry. I remember (& it has been 40+ years since I assembled a Hinchliffe artillery piece. That said, I do remember there were assembly instructions with the model parts in the box. With the Perry's wagon & gun I have had to work from online pictures from their site and others which has made it somewhat tricky.

Luckily, I had some old Hinchliffe artillery 'chain' left over in my 'stash' (none are provided by Perry) to use with connecting the horses to the carriage (for a better description). I am also struggling with the gunners seat, it is not obvious which way up it should go or that the back/arm rest needs to be bent to fit. Also where the seat fits onto the carriage as there is no obvious place cast into that part. Including an assembly diagram would have saved me hours.

    5. You see you don't get instructions with Hinchcliffe any more ,they appear to have fallen by the wayside! So gropping in the dark based on a finished photo, I think I ended up using thin string on my scratch built Austrian limbers and my French MDF limbers, I have been looking at the Bavarian Perry limber team as I contemplate a Bavarian force, I think I will be using HAT for my infantry, a little slighter than Perry but fine in their own unit, cheap and very little assembly!

  18. Terrific posting, Iain. I'm planning on doing some Foundry Austrians next month, and have been busy basing them in preparation. But no-where near the number you've got done here. This is definitely another of your posts I'll be returning to for inspiration when I get going on them.

    1. Thanks Simon, I've got some Foundry Austrian Grenadiers which are nice but rather diminutive, alright for general run but as grenadiers who are meant to be tall, a bit difficult?

  19. Nice. I have mixed the Victrix grenadiers with some Perry Miniaures metal ones and they blend quite well. I've also added flags for the combined battalions as a unit with a flag just looks better ;-)

    Best wishes,

  21. Lovely to see the big battalion of fine Austrian troops on the table. Great work Iain. I don't what is the hardest task though - shading all of that white, or assembling so many plastic parts! You have done a great job with them.
