AAR Pike and Shot War of three Kingdoms/ECW 27

We had another game at the club of Pike and Shot using the one hour wargame scenario Encounter with a hill in the middle and variable unit arrivals, twelve turns and eight units each, John had a later Oxford army and I had the Eastern Association. Whoever held the hill at the end of twelve turns would win.

I managed to reach the hill first but lost most of two pike and shot units leading the remaining units becoming a broken battalia.  My next battalia arrived and I kept a lively fire up on Johns regiments on the hill causing one regiment to rout and it was only the skilful rallying by their battalia commander that kept them in it, my cavalry arrived as did his in turn ten , unfortunately John had to leave and in spite of having possession of the hill he only needed to lose one unit and there were a number that were shaken plus I had three fresh pike and shot regiments at the bottom of the hill, so we called it a draw and I packed up, great fun but it will be more Valour and Fortitude Napoleonics at the club next time!

All the best

  1. Looks like a bit of to and fro action Iian - a tad frustrating you could not get an actual conclusion - sounded like you might have snatched a victory in the last turn or two!

  2. Looks to be a great game Iain, with plenty going on throughout, a draw sounds fair, at the point in which you had to stop.

  3. Always a ball ache when a game has to be called early. I think you’d have won that.

  4. Lovely stuff, Iain. A simple, yet clearly thoroughly enjoyable scenario. I can't believe how many battles those ECW figures have enjoyed in their new home with you. Wish I'd thought to send them your way years ago. LOL!!

    1. Thanks Simon, yes they've seen a fair bit of action, I haven't seen much of the star trek figures or the 15mm scifi figures, have I missed them?

  5. I like the escalation of units up from 6 to 8. By chance, I flicked through my copy of an Introduction to Wargaming by Neil Thomas, his first wargaming book and instantly thought how good a marriage the book would make with the scenarios from OHW, supplanting the rules that came with OHW.

On a separate note, something will be winging its way to you, well it will once I get to the Post Office …. Hopefully to arrive before your next Valour & Fortitude game🙂
