So these are the first of the odds and sodds featured previously as a work in progress, four medium guns, sakers, three purchased second hand, two purporting to be Napoleonic but I don't think so ,I'm pretty sure they're all hinchcliffe. The ECW crew that came with them were true 25mm so no use to me, I sent them off to Robbie of Independent wargaming blog. The other gun is made from an extended barrel from the £1.50 battle masters kit that supplied some recruits to a number of great Italian wars gendarmes units, the infantry are slowly being absorbed into a Swiss keil. Anyway the rest of the gun is balsa, cardboard and a pair of resin wheels, good enough for gaming and I'm happy with the result. The crew are mostly Old Glory except for one Essex crew who together with their gun are the last of the Essex army I bought off ebay a while ago, alright two house moves and when I bought them my daughter was in primary school, she's got one year left at university, so time flies, blink and you miss it! He's the commander in blue of the red gun.
It's pretty obvious which one is the scratch build but overall I'm happy enough.
Fantastic work on the artillery Iain, they all look very effective, including the scratch built parts. Excellent repurposing of all the different components to bring these all together, they should make for very effective guns and crews on the tabletop.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave, turned out alright in the end!

Well, it might be pretty obvious to you, but I needed a second view to notice! They all look great :)
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Suber!

Excellent artillery and crew!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Cyrus!

Well done on an excellent job. The guns look superb, I would never have known if you hadn't said.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Richard!

As others have said - a good match. I like that these have been set to look busy, but that the unit footprint is helpfully small.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm, yes I've adopted my Napoleonic artillery basing size, I might have to revisit my Italian wars artillery bases as they're enormous, also in the back of my mind is the idea of building a modular 17th century star fort so I had to keep the basing small enough in case that happens!

Still looking for all of the scratch built stuff. Not obvious at all. Well worth the effort mate.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Mark, up your street 28mm ECW, thought it was your next army?!

DeleteDon’t think I’ll be doing 28 again tbh Iain. I keep thinking about it but it takes me ages to paint a single figure, never mind two opposing armies. I’d have done Pendraken 10mm ECW in a heartbeat but I really don’t like the teeny weeny pikes they unusually been blessed with. Shame cos the rest of that range is lovely.
DeleteThat's a pity on both counts, you could of course replace the pikes? Or is that just too much work?
DeleteBest Iain
Yeah, it's not at all obvious to me which one is scratch-built either. All four stands look great, and full of life, and the guns all look great, too. Excellent work!
ReplyDeleteWell thank you very much Fitz, I thought you might like them as, for some reason I keep thinking of dwarves!
DeleteBest Iain
I confess I thought of dwarves, too, when I saw the guns. ha ha
DeleteThat is a really great scratch-build Iain, and lovely work on the group in general. It is amazing how time flies and pulling out old part-completed projects is a good way to underline that. At least the old Essex crew are now finally going to see some action.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence, time does fly and yes at least that part of the project is finished!

They all came out looking good to me. Nice job. 😀
ReplyDeleteThanks Stew, wrong civil war but glad you like them!

You make use of all sorts of products including a bit of scratchbuilding. Great results.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Jonathan, it's all fun!
DeleteBest Iain
Yes, I have nothing original to add, as most of the previous commenters have made the point about your scratch built gun already Iain!
ReplyDeleteWell thanks anyway Keith!

DeleteLate to the party, but add my name to those who like how they all came out and the facts behind the models. Using everything is a skill.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe, using everything is definitely a skill!

Great work sir!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Michal!

Excellent work Iain, they're a great match.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Ray!

Nice sets Iain.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark!

That's a really nice looking battery Iain! Surely there can't be much more in your unpainted pile?!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dai, well maybe 9 more Napoleonic French line infantry battalions , four old guard, five cavalry units plus more artillery and limbers and at least that much fo Napoleonic Austrians, a French and an English 100 years war army, dark age welsh, Romano British and Late Romans, Early Imperial Roman army some mounted crossbow men, pike, Swiss pike and battle carts for the great Italian wars, two units of 17th century dragoons, Montrose's army, more Soviets and some WW2 Germans, plus terrain!

Those cannons look really good!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much, not as complicated as your kits !

It’s been said before, but they look great Iain, nice busy looking basing. Must be very satisfying to have done the conversion. Great job.
ReplyDeleteAnd that tempis certainly does fugit!
Chris/Nundanket
Thanks Chris, that tempis really does!

Excellent work on that scratch gun. I love it! The others look good as well. And the crews are first rate Iain!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Vol, very kind of you!

Great looking cannon, Iain. I love the look of these older artillery - particularly the raised cast designs on guns themselves and also the banded wheels.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean, yes they're nice little works of art!
DeleteBest Iain
No matter their provenance the finished articles lok excellent. There is some excellent detailing to on these, which is pretty rare even for more modern models.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe and I agree that in spite of their age the Hinchcliffe models are really nice!
