War of three Kingdoms/ECW 15 two units of dragoons

A newly painted figure? Unheard of! But it is so, rapidly painted ( impressionistic Keith?) and not really matching his comrades,he is an Essex musketeer so not strictly a dragoon but why quibble when ,with the addition of this chap I can field two red coated dragoon units, one for each side with suitably generic standards, supplied by warlord games. To make up the numbers I press ganged various spare officer types and promoted pikemen into ensigns for the dismounted element. For the mounted chaps I found some spare officers to lead each unit and two cavalry troopers had their swords removed ( one had his sword already broken off) and hands drilled out to take a standard. All ( bar the newly painted chap) have been washed and rebased with new flags, the red really sings out once cleaned, I was slowly working on two more units of dragoons when I received this collection, all I  know is that neither will be a red regiment!

Both units together to prove that I haven't just painted one unit and moved them around!

The only little soldiers I have been painting lately, shiny soldiers of the queen I think? Next up will be most of the rest of the remaining rebasing chaps and then maybe some Napoleonic cavalry, while prepping for the Analogue Hobbies painting challenge which will be starting later this month.            All the best

 Iain

  1. Great looking dragoons, Iain. I've used "spare" figures and parts to flesh out units too - can't let good parts go to waste. Those clothes pin soldiers look cool too!

  3. I think that figure matches rather well, Iain. That was certainly one of the hurdles which put me off re-basing the figures, especially once I discovered Front Rank were no longer producing them. Great stuff.

    1. Yes I think the Essex range isn't bad as it's probably about the same date and not far off the build,it's just my painting style that's out!

    1. Thanks Jan, the Analogue Hobbies painting challenge is run every year by Curt Campbell from Analogue Hobbies blog, it runs from 20th of December to 20th of March and figures are marked according to size,28mm infantry 5 points, cavalry 10 points and so on, there is usually 80 to 100 people doing it and it's just a good natured way of producing figures in a supportive environment I guess, it's full for this year but check it out and you might like to join it next year, I've done it for a few years now,as has Blax!

  8. Nicely shaded to bring out the full character of the figure. I imagine that your box(es) of ‘spares’ and old figures never painted would be a fascinating exploration.

    1. I'm trying to clear out the figures for this period, the Italian wars has still got a load of old figures yet!

  13. I thouroughly apporve the use of figures from whatever fits the unit. Great shade of red too, idesl for the NMA, but still usable for both sides. Dragoons are a pain when you have to have duplicate figures for both mounted and dismounted, but who is holding the horses ? ;-)

    1. I know, horse holders too? They become the biggest unit on the table! I have thought about it to be honest, then decided against it!

  14. Always prudent to have a few spares in the replacement pile for just this situation. Your clothespin soldiers are AWESOME. I would enjoy learning more about these.

    1. It was really assigning painted personal really, with the exception of the newly painted figure! Would you like a peg soldier step by step?

  15. I always like padding out units with odds n sods. Especially for the Civil War when it’s good not to have too uniform an appearance.

Great to see dolly pegs put to good use! Will they go to the great outdoors when the campaigning season returns? True troops of the line. The washing line.

    1. Totally agree, a certain amount of non uniformity goes a long way,the line troops have done their time on the line!

  16. That sounds like a good deal; convert one figure and end up with two units. This rebasing seems to be the way to go. 😀

Cool cloth pins. That a neat idea that I’ll steal.

  17. I like these a lot. The only thing about the Christmas decoraions is that now you need to find a way to base them and raise a Regiment or two...
