Michael Awdry (of 28mm Victorian miniatures blog) has been working on a display game for Salute. As the date was coming closer in March he asked for a little help painting some figures and I was happy to oblige.
Now as we all know Salute hasn't happened this year so I didn't feel a desperate urgency to complete the figures but having finished the city walls they had pushed their way to the front of my painting que!
Here we have 10 SS late war Germans in a slightly impressionistic version of summer oak leaf camouflage. I was lucky that I had at one time bought the entire range of Ospreys men at arms in publication at that time ( being a little obsessive can be a good thing?) since it meant I had a book on the SS and another on German military equipment as I found they were much more complicated than my previous Soviets!
They are now packed up ready to wing their way to Casa Awdry.
I rather enjoyed doing these chaps, which is a good thing as I will need to do some winter Germans to oppose my Soviets.
Next up will be something rather earlier in date!
All the best Iain
Excellent work Iain, and another contributor to the castle the internet built, so great to see so many people help on this project
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave! Yes happy to join in and it was your work on the schloss that led me to your blog!

Always interesting to find out how people find each others blogs, and thanks for following along
DeleteThey look great Iain. The full set of MAAs? How many books was that at the time?
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter, not as many as there are now but quite a lot, it was back when they were copperplate graphics, 1980s early 1990s,I'll have to check!

Nice work, Iain! you are tempting me to shove some 28mm WWII figures into the painting queue. When will we be treated to an Eastern Front battle?
ReplyDeleteThanks Jonathan! It will be a while but it's certainly an aspiration!

Very nice Iain, the oak leaf camouflage came up well. Osprey 34, the Waffen SS by Martin Windrow?
ReplyDeleteThanks Greg! Spot on,he was also editor for MAA and Military Illustrated at the time, I always thought he wrote rather well!

Excellent work Iain! These minis carry quite dynamic poses and must have been nice to paint.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike! Yes they were fun and a nice change!

Very nice looking group! The cammo looks fine but maybe some more light on the photos would show it better :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I see what you mean, it's funny, they're daylight strips and usually they light up pretty well but it might be they're not high enough?

Very nice and a definite change of pace from your recent Dark Ages and Renaissance accomplishments Iain. These have a lot of character which you have highlighted beautifully.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence! Yes,change as good as a rest!

Great work on these troops Iain. I think the diversion was successful:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Dmitry! Not up to your GIs but decent!

This section should mix in well with the othe 'Schloss' troops headed Michael's way. The camo is a little difficult to make out but it's definetly there!
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe! Yes as Biblicrafts points out it's a bit dark but your right in real life it's definitely there!

Great looking troops, Iain. Camouflage is excellent.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean! Very kind of you!

Nice to see these figures pass your painting table. very nicely done and toned down. Looking forward to your WWII report when that happens. I have an unco-operative KV-1 kit on the ‘construction’ table right now.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm! More your period than mine, even if I dabble! Good luck with your KV 1 I've been building a IS2 for a couple of years now!

Great job on the camo. I always found that too hard to paint. Nice of your to help out with a project. Too bad this year is the year of cancellations. 😀
ReplyDeleteThanks Stew! Nonsense! A man of your calibre would easily do it if you needed to! Yes a year of delay but fingers crossed for 2021!

Nice job on these Iain,
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Paul!

Looking great!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Michal!

I love your versatility. You change subjects from medievals to ancients and now to WW2 and you keep both the pace and quality. No matter if it's a gaudy livery or an oak leaf camouflage, you manage to produce really interesting pieces all the time. That's quite an art!
ReplyDeleteThanks Suber! A change is as good as a rest I think! It's nice to be varied!

Very nice work Iain and a bit of a change from your usual posts!

I'm always driven slightly mad by camo, so well done on finishing these with your sanity intact. Looking forward to the winter versions!
ReplyDeleteThanks Marcus! Less camo on the winter chaps at least!

Thank you so much Iain, they look amazing! Can't wait to see them reunited with their comrades. It was so kind of you to offer assistance at the time and shiny example of just how great our community can be.
ReplyDeleteNo problem Michael, they're on their way now,I look forward to them being reunited!
