I've added a little lighter skin tone to some of them but otherwise they are as finished last century, the same is true of the three minifigs that make up their numbers in this unit, unlike the previous elderly pagans who at least got a fair bit of D&D gaming in the 1970s, these chaps were painted and have sat waiting for the call for 40 years!
I have had to paint their shields, that's about it.
They've been based on 120mm wide mdf bases for TtS!
Next up is a unit of Newline legionarys that came primed in white. I've gone for undyed tunics and I've invented a shield design that is close enough and good enough!
Side by side the late 20th century 25mm figures work pretty well with their 28mm 21st century comrades, I think?
Next up, more Roman's? More troops for Dux Bellorum? Or maybe something more recent? I'm not sure to be honest!
All the best Iain

Nice job on the shields. The two sets do sit well together and it’s nice to see the vintage stuff see the light if day ....... but 40 years though! How did that happen!
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm! I think they work pretty well together, I think it was going to art school in Nottingham in the mid to late 1980s and GW releasing 40k and just getting sucked into all that really, but nice to be back doing historical stuff now!

Old figures for new basing and new rules; what is not to like? 120mm frontage is a good solution and allows play with Impetvs too!
ReplyDeleteViewed from the table, your 25mm and 28mm show little difference in size. Nice shieldwork!
Thanks Jonathan! Yes a win win situation! I liked basic impetus the first time around and have bought the new version and these bases are reused from then as I only tapped the figures down temporarily, waste not want not!

Great work on the Romans Iain, all the figures fit well together in my opinion, and good you've now got a use for them.
ReplyDeleteRemember the good old days of GW holding stock of other peoples products, now it falls to independent stockists to do the same
Thanks Dave! Yes I think they'll work well enough!

Very nice!
ReplyDeleteGames Workshop stocking other peoples products - I remember it well.
That 1980's Games Day programme belongs in a museum!
Thanks Mark! I found it clearing stuff from the loft,as my wife says, I keep loads of old crap!

Great to see old stuff re-surface. Do you have more in the cupboard Iain?
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot! Yes there will be at least one more reuse and recycle post!

I have soft spot for early Imperial Romans, so you got my attention right from the beginning. I love these.
ReplyDeleteThanks Suber! Me too!

Great to see unused lead repurposed and hopefully getting to the tabletop soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter! Well it was for a TtS tournament but I can't see it happening, I'm just ploughing ahead regardless!

Nice variety of EIR, Iain.

Very nice old Romans Iain, especially nice to see in these days of shield transfers.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lee! Oh there will be transfers down the line (if I can work out how to use them!)

No miniatures left behind! That’s the motto.
ReplyDeleteNice job giving some old miniatures new life. I can’t believe you’ve hung onto these guys for forty years. Simply incredible! 😀
Thanks Stew! I don't get rid of anything which is occasionally useful!

Lovely "resurrected Romans', beautiful work!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Phil!

Great work Iain and just goes to show you should never get rid of anything...one day, you will find a use for them...I have a few original 1980's figures in a couple of my collections. It's nice to have a few old originals still around.
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith! It's good to sprinkle them through the collection, like seasoning!

Games Day 1980...
ReplyDelete40 years ago...
I was there...
Now officially feeling old...
Nice to see some vintage toys getting another chance for victory...
All the best. Aly
How does it go," yesterday when I was young "! At least they've finally got a chance of a game!

The 'old' figures compare well with the newer ones, something I think I've been saying for years. (Same with rules too).
ReplyDeleteI have to applaud your shield work - mine are all trasfers and don't look half as good !
Thanks Joe! I think they're still pretty good figures, not sure about the sunk in designs on the old shields though! I will be doing transfers as I bought the warlord plastic army set and they all come with transfers!
