Here is another unit of Italian lance spezzate for the Great Italian wars, more Perry plastics, more splendid flags from Petes flags, Ive also included some blackened armour based on Cappaccios Venetian knight from about 1507, he reminded me a bit of those Bretonian knight errants with their long hair from about 1990!
So black ink with a bit of gloss varnish, that makes halfway through these chaps. This time Pete's flags are from the Florentine republic, slightly earlier but such lovely flags had to be used! Theres a couple of Perry 100 years war mounted knights with head swaps to make up the numbers, but I think they'll do?
Painting another Italian pike block, Perry plastic mercenary box pike with additional Perry metal heads and busily scratch building gun carts for Ravenna, Italian wars bug seems to have bit?
Bases 45mm 60mm , 3mm mdf from warbases.
Next up, more of the same or Napoleonics or an AAR?
All the best
Iain

Splendid looking horsemen! I await developments on the Ravenna battlefield.
ReplyDeleteThat was fast Jonathan! Maybe notifications are working this time?! Trying to work through a few Italian wars battles, Ravenna is on the list but Ive got to finish my war carts first!

I was thinking that maybe the notifications issue has been fixed, as when I logged on just now, 3 posts appeared on my feed and none of them from days or many hours ago. Fingers crossed and all that!
DeleteYes, I think youre right, we will see how long that lasts!

Fine work there Iain and those flags are too good not be used as you rightly say:)! I couldn't help but notice the bookcases/shelves in the background, which made me rather jealous. Maybe one day...
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve, yes lovely flags, got to be used! Theyre a load of billy bookcases I inherited, theyre in the shed with my tools so they do get a bit dusty, god knows what happens to them when we downsize!

Excellent work, Iain. The bug has well and truely bitten. Look forward to seeing the progress.
ReplyDeleteLook, I'm not saying its all your fault but you certainly contributed!

Liking these very much. The dark armour is very menacing and those flags are indeed rather lovely.
ReplyDeleteThose paintings you've highlighted are classic images too, but what's going on along the bottom of that second one? A woman being boiled alive, a man tied to a pillar getting stabbed with spears? Goodness that era was violent.
Glad you like them Dai, the paintings great and I saw it last time I was in Venice, with his St Ursula cycle hes one of my favourite Italian renaissance artists, the pictures along the bottom are part of the allegory, the dragon is the Ottoman Turks which Venice was fighting a long losing struggle with, although as this painting is from a Dalmation (Croation) schola in Venice, they would argue they were on the front line of Europe and held out the Turks, so I guess this celebrates this?

Very nicely done Iain.
ReplyDeleteFor an interesting take on whether armour is black or white you could try You Tuber Lorica Clothing's take:

I found her other stuff interesting as well, especially the review of GW Cathay Empire Old World.
Thanks Ben, an interesting rabbit hole, I liked the purple armour!

Iain, stunning sight of the armor and standards. Something that looks this good suggests a turn in a game that will prove heroic.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joe, well we can live in hope!

What's not to like about a mounted knight? Fabulous job Iain.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you again Michael and yes whats not to like?

Good idea to represent blackened armour, I’ve seen this used a bit in ECW armies as well.
ReplyDeleteI think I did it on some royalist cuirassiers? Sensible as it meant you didnt have to spend as much time on maintenance!
