Well its been a while since we had these chaps on the table, more than two years, and since Des found some Valour and Fortitude variants on facebook that could cover the mid 17th century for pike and shot we resolved to have a game. Des took a parliamentarian army and I took the royalists. We essentially mirrored each other with the same number of pike and shot units, artillery, cavalry and a unit of dragoons each.
The artillery was largely ineffective and fundamentaly I managed to destroy Des's cavalry on his right flank and roll most of his army up, it helps I rolled well and he rolled less well , great fun for a learning game though and nice to get the toys on the table after a long absence!
Next up Italian wars cavalry, AAR or wagons and livestock?
All the best
Iain

Great job! I especially liked the fact that the bases match the color of the table.

A cracker of a game Iain!! I didn't know there's a ECW variant for V&F?
ReplyDeleteYes, its on the facebook group, Italian wars as well , more of that anon!
DeleteBest Iain
Good to see an ECW on the table and interesting to do it using mirror armies. Are V&F now your preferred set?
ReplyDeleteI guess the mirrored armies was just so we could see how it played in a pike and shot contesxt as opposed to Napoleonic, it stood up pretty well I thought, weve tried the Italian wars now as well, Ive still got to do a write up on that, theres a new version v4 out whichis meant to be the final version, a few changes but had a go with the Napoleonics last night and they played well we thought?

Great to see your ECW armies back on the table after two years. I bet my ECW armies have been dormant longer than that!
ReplyDeleteIts easily done, isnt it!

Great looking game with lovely figures Iain an a famous victory for you....just a shame you were commanding the "wrong" side! Are some of these figures from the venerable Front Rank range? The pikemen look like they are, at least....
ReplyDeleteThanks Keith, yes I think you helped identify them when I traded them for a load of 40k/star trek stuff, as I was brought up as RC from mostly Ulster stock you will forgive me if I dont root for Cromwell!

Nice work Iain I do like a bit of pike and shotte. We thought about V&F when thinking of rules for my collection as it seems to lend itself quite easily to the period. We’re happy now though with our KoW derivative 👍
ReplyDeleteYes it seems to work really well for you, I think at the club it was played more competitively than in in my shed and just turned into lining up for flank attacks ,trying swordpoint next at the club!

Great looking game Iain and obviously the Dice Gods took the side of the King 😁
ReplyDeleteThanks Ben, youve got to be lucky sometimes, I think it evens out?

Fantastic looking armies, Iain. Nice that the rules seem to working for you. Handy to have one core set for multiple periods.
ReplyDeleteIts a bit easier on the little grey cells I think!

Inspiring and timely, Iain! Motivates me even more to finish up my ECW Battalia figs.
ReplyDeleteIts a fun period and theres just somthing about the pike blocks and cavalry seeming like 3d versions of period prints that I like!

Nice looking game! Excited to see the wagons and livestock, I love seeing people’s set dressing.
ReplyDeleteThanks SD, yes its fun seeing set dressing!

The ECW variant is news to me too Iain. A great game with some lovely figures.
ReplyDeleteTheres a few variants, thought it was worth having a go?
DeleteBest Iain
Doesn't surprise me that V&F would get some variants have been developed by faithful fans. Read like a good set were I ever to get into massed rank combat.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking game Iain.
You never know you might get some time or a big box of painted figures as I did for this period!
DeleteBest Iain
They would most DEFINITELY have to be painted - I just can't imagine having time in the next 5 or so years to paint armies of that size...
DeleteStranger things have happened!

Stunning display as usual, I always welcome pics of your games
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Suber!
