A couple of Valour and Fortitude games Napoleonic 90

I've had a couple of games at the club, spreading the valour and fortitude good news, another game with one of the Ians and one with Keith. I was playing the Austrians both times.

So this was a pretty even game up until Ian played an additional move card which meant he caught my cavalry unprepared and steamrollered my left flank, a French victory, so a pretty good training game for Ian. Next club I took much the same for the French but swapped brigades for the dragoons to support the cuirassiers and traded in the chevaulegers for a unit of hussars and replacing one of the landwehr units with a line infantry unit. We set up in a similar fashion, although this time with a hill in the middle, Keith procceded to set up behind the hill and I had to remind him he was French and not British and needed to get stuck in with his attack columns, all went well , certainly for Keith whos die throwing was  enough to win the game helped by me failing valour and fortitude tests! I enjoyed both games thoroughly! Always good to get toys on tables.

Probably should have split this post in two, too many photos, well done for getting this far.

Next up, more Italian wars cavalry or  another V&F  AAR, theres some Napoleonic hussars making progress too, its all good fun!

All the best

Iain

  1. Fantastic collection of excellent photos of two brilliant games Iain, although unfortunate results in both of them from your perspective!

  2. Great to see the Naps out in action, you can’t beat them 👍 we certainly enjoy V&F we do add one tweek (raising their tenacity by one) to encourage the french to advance in attack column otherwise we find they don’t really get enough advantage ?

    1. I guess theyre fighting British? In my games playing Austrian or French they dont generally need it to be honest!

    2. Certainly helps with the British but the rule developed when fighting the Russians, we just found the rules allowed and encouraged the french and Russians to advance in line which just didn’t feel or look quite right .

    3. Thats interesting, I just found with the elan rule getting the French in assault column into melee always seemed to be the way to go?

  7. Two great looking games Iain, they both look superb. No joy with the results but playing in two such cracking games is more than enough I would say. Great collection and nice to see them in on the table.

  8. Lovely looking tables with a nice sense of mass. V&F must be second nature to you now, despite being short, the rules do need a few plays to fully embed.

  9. All good fun indeed:)! Shame the Austrians lost twice in a row, but you enjoyed yourselves, which is the most important thing. Lots of lovely photos to enjoy and nice to be able to have plenty of space to put the toys on the table.

    1. Its a bit tougher to get a result with the Austrians I think, yes the community hall is a modern useful space!

  10. Two fun games, even if you were on the losing side. Valour and Fortitude seems to throw up some fun games so I really must give them a try.

    1. It does attract interest from the 40k players, which is nice and theres a few who have tried Napoleonics but given up who I hope to sign up, Im even getting someones discarded Napoleinic Prussian project gratis so I have hopes he will give me a game down the road!

  13. Hello Iain: Wow, that was a Napoleonic feast of a post, thanks for sharing those terrific photos. I love how those figures are painted above the mark for table top standard. I have read a lot about the V&F rules and should check them out. I wonder how they would do for 6mm armies? Cheers, Michael. madpadrewargames.blogspot.com

  14. Lovely stuff! I keep on flip flopping between Valour & Fortitude and Black Powder, I have a War of 1812 project I’ve been slowly working so nice to see some examples of the game being played.

    1. I find you get a resolution/result with Valour and Fortitude that you dont get with blackpowder, they are kind of cousins and share similarities which for me leads to confusion! Looking forward to your 1812 project!

  18. Great looking battle, Iain. Although the mechanics of V&F look interesting, I've lazily stuff with Black Powder since I'm more familiar with them.
