I nipped down to Bens as he wanted to have a first go at Pillage from Victrix, which he'd had for a while, a dark age skirmish game, I played Picts and Ben used my pagan Saxons as later Saxons. Its a points based warband, what you see is what you get, to encourage you to convert Victrix figures I guess? Anyway, I had enough dark age figures to put something together with 600 points for each side. Armour is super cheap for Anglo Saxons so they virtually all had armour, which seemed a little odd, I was persuaded I had to have archers which if you're Picts are hideously expensive. We rolled and Ben was the aggressor, which meant he was raiding and stealing sheep/pigs/loot etc which I hadnt brought along and also intending to burn the village down.
I was able to place up to three figures in the village, I put the archers there. Ben split his force sending half around the village to my right so I tried to move all my troops towards his other group, the one without a leader, the archers seem to be a bit like snipers and I found it a bit weird ducking into cover like Bolt action. The close combat system is pretty good, once we worked out all the abreviations in the charts were in French, we found a quick reference sheet online, which I think is essential. It would probably have helped if one of us had read the rules beforehand, but we had fun, instead of following the scenario, it just turned into a pitch battle as Bens leaders group hot foot it into combat, swirling fights all over the village and Ben set fire to a building, ultimately that killed more of his troops than mine, we didnt reach turn 10 as my warband was anhilated but Ben didn't have many figures left by the end. A fun beer and pretzels type game that I wouldnt mind having another go at, if I use Picts again I think I'll drop the archers and armour and just get lots of lads with spears and shields. I was happy to get my dark age village out, well a mix of my small, simple timber framed buildings and some Russian log buildings, and especially the church ,plus in the search for armoured Saxons,we got to use various Asgard and Ral Partha figures, who'd all been non player characters in the first games of basic D&D I played in the 1970s and haven't had a game since about 1983! It has got me working on an ox cart and a donkey cart and prepping lots of pigs and livestock!
As I usually play Napoleonics at the club, I forgot to secure my almost entirely metal dark age collection, that won't happen again!
Backlog of AARs, some painting nearing completion, went to Partizan, saw some lovely games and it was nice to meet Mat,Steve and Ray there!
All the best

Great looking game and figures, Iain. I think someone ran a Pillage game at our recent convention. Didn't get a chance to watch it played though.
ReplyDeleteYes, newish game there was a game at Partizan, so getting a bit of traction?

Not heard of the rules before. Game looked great snd sounds like it was a success. Your collection took some rough handling by the looks of your photo. I saw Ray(?) post a photo of you from his Partizan photo dump. Great to put a face to a name!
ReplyDeleteYes fun and Ive checked ghe figures , just some shields and spears need a bit of superglue! Photos on Rays and Matts blog!

Super looking game Iain, the scenery and figures look great, not a rule set I am familiar with, so very interesting.
ReplyDeleteNice to get the collection out, pretty recent set of rules?

Great looking models Iain. Abbreviations in French can’t be any worse than DBA!
ReplyDeleteHope there wasn’t any serious damage.
Chris/Nundanket

A nice looking dark age skirmish Iain how do the rules compare with other skirmishes I wonder, our preference is Lion rampant which work for us
ReplyDeleteI guess its more period specific, its fine and fun but I think lion rampant is probably better if I had ti choose?

Great looking game Iain and must have been fun if it has got you painting extra figures and accessories.
ReplyDeleteI think archers maybe like snipers in a skirmish game as they would be firing at individuals vs in a battle firing at a formation.
Having no figures or terrain for this I don't think I will buy the rules. (Not that that has ever mattered before 😂)
To be honest, it doesnt take a lot to get me painting figures! Reading your last paragraph, I look forward to your first game of this with Disney figures!

Fun looking game! Crazy to think some minis haven’t got a game since the 80’s, wasn’t even a twinkle in my father’s eye at that point!
ReplyDeleteYes theres been sime figures who've spent a long time in various lofts waiting for their turn!

Looks like a fun game Iain and reminds me of my early days of mordheim skirmish games, where quite often we simply ignored the scenario victory conditions, by simply trying to kill off the enemy wardband! Great to meet you at the show too and could have had fun chewing the cud over art college (I was at Kingston Poly '83-'86), modelmaking, film and wargaming:).
ReplyDeleteYes, a fun game and likewise good to chat briefly, I was a little behind you, Nottingham Trent poly 85-88 doing Theatre design, all fun!

Seemed like a lot of fun Iain - and apropos your comment on my latest post, I had not seen this post on any blog lists - I clicked on your name on the comment on my post to come here to see what your latest post was - hence the reason numbers of visitors/comments are down I guess.......
ReplyDeleteYes , fun game and also not on many blog lists, Im sure it will work out!

Pillage sounded like an interesting rules set when it was first released. Sounds like they play pretty well too. Might try to convince Stew to pic them up so he can run a game or two. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat last pic had my heart miss a beat and not in a good way. Was the damage bad?
Yes, worth a run out, especially as Stew has plenty of dark age types, luckily the damage wasnt so bad, a few spears and shields needed gluing on but thankfully that was it!

I hope there was not too much (or any) damage to teh miniatures. Thanks for teh sit rep on Pillage as I am considering it to complement Saga for my Dark Age collection!
ReplyDeleteNot too much damage, spears and shields, looked worse at first !
